The title of Despot of New Constantinople was created by Emperor Demetrius II of Pantocratoria for his eldest son and heir, Prince Demetrius. The Despot rules directly over the "state within a state" that is the Despotate of New Constantinople - he is essentially the monarch of the city of New Constantinople. The title is typically granted to the Emperor's oldest son on his twenty first birthday, and practically (although not technically) nominates him as the heir. Upon the death of the Emperor, the Despot of New Constantinople typically succeeds, and either abandons the title, or, if he has a son who has come of age he grants the title to that son.

The current Despot of New Constantinople is Prince Andreus.
