Brief History

Ancient Past

The island group of which the Imperium of DPUO is presently composed was first inhabited, it is believed, around 4,600 BC. The islands appear to have been colonised by peoples of largely Eastern Asian, especially Japanese, stock. The islands were colonised from a westerly direction; the oldest permanent-seeming settlement found thus far dates back to around 4,500 BC, and was founded on the Republic's westernmost island. It is today the site of the capital, Sun City (also known as Taskograd or Tashkishki), known for thirty years as Krasniy Novgorod in celebration of the defeat of the White DPUO movement, a white supremacist body supported by the governments of South Africa and Rhodesia, and certain groups such as the Church of the Christian Identity.

The ancient settlers appear to have evolved a fairly advanced civilisation, becoming expert metalworkers and competent seafarers. Their buildings were made primarily from wood and a wattle-and-daub like material, and frequently the Japanese pagoda was used to combat the rains which often sweep the islands. The most important structures were generally constructed from stone and metal; the foremost example of this style of construction, first seen during the period known to archaeologists as the Era of the Third High King, is without a doubt the Great Temple of Tashki, situated on the island of Fijusona. Discovered some two years prior to the accession of Emperor Marcus I, the Temple complex covers some 9.4 square miles of jungle; at its centre is an enormous Tashki temple, still the largest in existence, which is unique among all ancient temples thus disovered in having its golden roof dome intact. It was from inscriptions found within the Temple's vast library, one of the largest ancient tablet collections known, that the exact information regarding the islands' ancient political system was obtained, an action which led directly to the dissolution of the Republic, and thw crowning of the Islands' first true Emperor since 1624.

Colonial Era

The last High King (an office which was identical to that of Emperor) died in 1624, leaving a power vacuum among the islands that would later compose DPUO. As each island was a kingdom, fighting was quick to break out as the various tribal kingdoms vied for overall control of the archipelago. This fighting continued in a constant manner for some 131 years, with no one kingdom able to gain real supremacy over any other. Surprisingly, no individual with the strength of will and leadership to take the office of High King made himself apparent during this time (or if one did, he was soon lost among the near-incessant turmoil of tribal conflicts). The result was the weakening of all of the warring kingdoms, the loss of great amounts of knowledge and the destruction of significant numbers of ancient artefacts (for example, it is thought that 79 previous High Kings' graves were plundered to fund individual kingdoms' war efforts). In consequence, the archipelago was ripe for colonisation when it was discovered by Commodore Tiberius Park (later Admiral Tiberius Park) in 1755. Park's initial foray onto the islands was met with enthusiasm by the king of the Western kingdom of Tashkikaito (literally "Kingdom of the Sun"), the riches of which had been squandered by the constant battles in which it was embroiled; the then-King was happy to buy British muskets in exchange for slaves and what ancient artefacts remained in his kingdom, and indeed this trade persisted for several years. However, the British East India Company had during this time become increasingly interested in probing the islands' resources, and thus Park, by now an Admiral, returned to Tashkikaito in 1762 with a large prospecting party. Unsurprisingly reluctant to give up the islands' resources to the British, the now-dominant King made strenupous attempts to eject Park's party from the Kingdom, first by bribery and then by force; unfortunately, neither was successful and the Kingdom was subjugated in a campaign of nine months which saw the death of some 40% of its population. The conclusion of hostilities at the port town of Kaisus (renamed Port Jacob by the British in honour of the leader of the land campaign) opened the way for the BEIC to begin exploitation of the Western islands. The campaign to conquer the Eastern isles was of equal swiftness and resulted in an equally high proportion of native deaths, despite the resistance being rather more capable and operating in a guerrilla fashion against the far superior British forces.

The BEIC and its successors retained rights to exploit the islands for more than 150 years, and the British exploitation of the islands' resources only ended with the final disappearance of British rule in 1959.
