Duke of Dorchet

The Duchy of Dochet is the second oldest (following only the Duchy of Evanpass) in Shadoran and fifth oldest on the Shield. The current Duke of Dorchet, from the Midden family, also holds the title of Earl of Eastergate, the oldest Earldom in Shadoran. Dorchet is also considered to be one of the most prestigious titles in Iansisle.

The Duchy has gone through four creations. The first Duke of Dorchet was created by Queen Jessica II of Shadoran in recognition of the rôle of Thomas Samernost had played in organizing her government. The original impetuous is said to be the royal marriage which allied Shadoran to the neighboring Kingdom of Vesshampton. Thomas Albert Samernost, the seventh Duke of the First Creation, died without an heir in 1726.

The Second Creation was in 1755, when High King Toto I of the Shield decided to reward one of his most successful generals with the title. Damonosa Uperhin died without an heir in 1769.

High King James I created Sir John Jans, one of his most trusted advisors from his European exile, the Duke of Dorchet in 1772 and gave the family a permanent seat in the new Imperial Parliament that he was creating. The Jans family would hold the position until Henry Jans was stripped of the title for his rôle in the Dorchet Plot of 1900-1901.

High King Toto IV created Howard Midden the Earl of Eastergate the Duke of Dorchet in 1930 in return for his support during the Spiritual Parliament of 1929-30.
