Edolian (Edöliani) is one of the two official languages of the Socialist Empire of Edolia and is spoken as a first language by some 95% of the native-born population.

The origins of Edöliani date back to the fifteenth century CE when Catholic missionaries in Edolia brought with them the Latin language. Although originally only the elite read and wrote Latin, the practice of speaking it as a first language came into style shortly after the arrival of the missionaries and by the nineteenth century, well after Catholicism had been virtually eradicated from Edolia, a form of Latin was spoken by virtually the entire populace.

Regardless of circumstances, it is almost impossible for a foreign language to be adopted by a populace so completely that their previous languages are forgotten, and the Latin that became the standard tongue of all Edolians is virtually unrecognizable today, having been mixed with the previous dialects of Edolia.

The Sound of Edöliani

Edöliani is often described as sounding like Italian spoken by drunken orcs, and this description is not entirely off. Edöliani is virtually Latin, although it takes some of its vocabulary and grammar from other languages, including Old Edolian, Chinese and Sindarin. The Edolian accent is harsh and gutteral and strong vowel sounds are frequently heard.
