History

Main article: History of Egypt and Sudan

The history of Egypt and Sudan is the longest continuous history, as a unified state, of any country in the world; however, historians have usually divided it into eight periods. Please read the article titled History of Egypt and Sudan for a brief summary of the Kingdom’s history.

Politics

Main article: Politics of Egypt and Sudan

The Kingdom of Egypt and Sudan is a constitutional monarchy with a federal system of parliamentary government, and strong democratic traditions. The political system under which Egypt and Sudan operates was first set forth by the Constitution Act 1801 granted by HM King Abd-Allah IX, and has been amended several times. The Constitution protects individual and political freedoms, including freedom of religion. Although religion and state are separate, a few historical ties remain; the Royal family is Muslim. Freedom of speech also is protected.

The Head of State and theoretical ultimate source of power in the Kingdom of Egypt and Sudan is The Egypto-Sudanese Monarchy, currently His Royal Majesty King Ahmad of Khalil. The longer the monarch reigns, the greater the degree of his experience and knowledge, something all governments and prime ministers tap into in their weekly confidential meetings with the monarch. Royal Assent is required for all acts of Parliament and the legislatures, which sit at His Majesty’s pleasure. Persons swearing allegiance to Egypt and Sudan, such as immigrants, soldiers, and parliamentarians, swear allegiance to His Majesty as King of the Kingdom of Egypt and Sudan and as the legal embodiment of Egypto-Sudanese sovereignty. To a great extent the political head of the country is the Prime Minister of Egypt and Sudan, who must have the support of the National Assembly, the Lower House of Parliament. In formal terms, the Crown in Parliament is sovereign.

The more important house of parliament, Majlis Al-Uma or the National Assembly, has 453 members, and is elected once every five years by proportional representation. Like a number of other countries worldwide with proportional representation, the Kingdom of Egypt and Sudan has mostly had coalition governments which have usually been unstable.

The executive branch of government is headed by the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Egypt and Sudan who appoints the Ministers and State Secretaries of the cabinet. The Prime Minister is the head of the cabinet, and as such, coordinates the policy of the government.
