Princess Emilie Angela of Verditania (also called Madame de Verditanie) is the wife of Charles Angelus, the Prince of Verditania, a Pantocratorian island-duchy. Born out of wedlock as Emilie Derncasteur to an unknown father, she was put in an orphanage in Adrienople by her mother just days after her birth. A bright, likeable and pretty young girl, she was earmarked at an early age as a possible Emperor's Maiden and was therefore not made available for adoption by potential parents. The matron of the orphanage's decision was vindicated when, at the age of twelve, Emilie was accepted as an Emperor's Maiden and moved to the Imperial Court of Christ Pantocrator, New Rome. She grew into a particularly lovely young lady even by the standards of the Emperor's Maidens, with long golden hair, milky white skin and emerald eyes.

When she left her adopted sisters at the age of eighteen, she was pursued by a number of men of quality, mainly of the lower nobility and gentry, however, amongst her suitors was one particularly high born gentleman, Charles Angelus, the Prince of Verditania, a man then in his early thirties whose first marriage had ended tragically when his wife died in childbirth, along with the baby. Although dubious at the age difference, the prospect of rising to the rank of duchess (the Prince of Verditania being styled prince for reasons lost to history but being understood to be the equal of a duke) was evidently appealing enough that Emilie, then eighteen, married the Prince and became Princess of Verditania. The couple has not yet had children, and spends most of their time in New Rome rather than Verditania.
