Emmanuel Helstag (April 28, 1948 - July 31, 2005) was President of Nimzonia from October 25, 2004 until his death.

Career

Born in Koenberg in 1948, Helstag joined the army at the age of 19, and by 2002 had been promoted to Field Marshall, in command of the Nimzonian army and reporting directly to the minister of defence. Helstag and some of his Generals were dissatisfied with General Jaarinen's move away from totalitarianism, and formed the Nieureijk Nimzonia Cabal in order to overthrow Jaarinen and return to a more conservative form of government.
After having Jaarinen assassinated in October 2004, Helstag assumed the presidency and set about purging the army and government of factions supporting Otto Jaarinen, the former president's son. This led to the Nimzonian Civil War, in which a sizeable portion of the Nimzonian Navy and elements of the army and air force rebelled against Helstag's rule and attempted to replace him with Jaarinen.

Death and Legacy

In July 2005, his sanity depleted by the deteriorating military situation, Helstag decided that if he couldn't have Nimzonia, nobody could, and proceded to use Nimzonia's nuclear arsenal against its own cities. He was presumably killed in the nuclear blast that destroyed the city of Koenberg.
After his death, a period of anarchy followed, before a new government was organised by Olaf Jakobsson, a navy admiral who had remained loyal to Otto Jaarinen.
