The Free Land of Enatai is the leading superpower of the Bellevue and Greater Eastside region, and is considered the #1 vacation spot in Bellevue and Greater Eastside, in addition to being the largest and oldest. Its people are fiercely patriotic and for the most part law-abiding, although this is due in part to the fact that the laws are somewhat less constricting than the laws in some of the region's other countries.

History

Early History: 800s to 1600s

Enatai was inhabited early in the ninth century mainly by Vikings, as it provided not only great access to the Pacific seas, but it was also fantastically hard to navigate without being as seaworthy as the Norse. There are no surviving records of Enatai's discovery or inhabitance by Vikings earlier than 1670, many centuries after the fact. It was without a doubt the only Pacific Viking country in the area at the time. In time permanent towns and landmarks were established, and the Vikings settled in and, after a few major wars, eventually settled into an uneasy peace with their neighbors, who called the land Enatai, which stuck better than the original name of Treland. These Vikings kept their warlike practices even after the conversion to Christianity came to the country. Vikings also mated heavily with the native population. After the Discovery of America again by Columbus in 1492, those that knew of Enatai began to have an interest in it once again, and slowly people began to trickle in. By 1600 there was a thriving colony of people, now descending from not just Europeans but of Asians that heard of Enatai from the Europeans they were just meeting.

Enataian Renaissance: 1500s to 1600s

Enatai went through a Renaissance a little later than some European countries. A number of artists and musicians came over to Enatai, and from there came sort of original Enataian culture. With this also developed Enataian politics and Enatai's declaration of independence from the rest of North America. The population exploded at this point, and it's no wonder why: {{I have been informed by a very well-off friend of mine living in Enatai that the average Enataian is quite well-off. Nature treats the nation well, and it is thickly forested with easily logged trees such as cedar and fur. Buildings go up in a number of weeks. Animals are abundant and peaceful, and mate much faster than people can eat them. I have been told that the deer there is relatively delicious. Weather is good and the geography makes it a hard nation to attack from land, and anyone attempting a takeover by sea would be almost instantly destroyed. I am planning to move there in the summer.

Civil and Political Rights

Citizens of Enatai enjoy the following civil and political rights granted to them by the Government:

  • The right to free speech
  • The right to bear arms
  • The right to peacefully assemble
  • The right to work
  • The right to purchase goods
  • The right to sell goods with the proper grants
  • The right to free press
  • The right to a fair and honest trial
  • The right to an attorney
  • The right to not be intruded upon without a properly approved warrant
  • The right to a punishment no harsher than need be
  • The right to defend property (this includes the right to kill an intruder if the situation requires it)
  • The right to vote
  • The right to travel freely throughout the country
  • The right to spend money however they like on legal goods
  • The right not to be sold into slavery
  • The right to press charges within the legal time limit
  • The right to go out in public dressed in any article of clothing they want, so long as they are wearing enough not to be considered public indecency
  • The right to leave the country

Political System

The Political system in Enatai is a unique system in the region. It goes as such:

Royal Branch

The head political figure is the King, who rules over all of Enatai. The King may veto any bill passed onto him by Enataian council and may enact any law he wishes upon the land. It is thought in Enatai that a King should always consider what is truly best for his people and not for him, and should be at the least semi-benevolent. Today the King is considered incredibly understanding and has a very large approval rating. The Queen is able to vote in the Council, and is worth ten Councilmembers, but beyond that the Queen is simply a famous politician. All of the princes and princesses may do as they please in regards to occupations, but when the King dies, the throne goes to the son of his choosing, or if he has no sons, it goes to the male of his choosing, who goes through a ceremony officially changing his family to that of the King's.

Culture

Clothing

Enatai's current climate is considered temperate but a little bit more rainy than some of the other countries along the Pacific Coast. On the other hand, Enatai's summers are notoriously dry. This leads to a bit of a problem when it comes to clothing. However, Enatai's citizens seem to highly prefer the casual over the "fashionable," and the clothes one wears are ridiculed usually only if it promotes something totally inappropriate. Hoodies are much in demand. Office dress codes are usually relaxed, but due to habit, the usual officewear is indeed the classic shirt and tie.

Dating & Marriage

Dating is encouraged throughout Enatai. Most high school couples go on through college, and a large percentage of those couples go on to get married. Same-sex couples are accepted but coincidentally rare, and same-sex marriages are even rarer. Forced marriages are considered especially cruel and unusual, and to do so for family honor is a surefire way to make sure that your family has virtually no power in Enatai for the next few generations, so forced marriages are fantastically rare.

Architecture

Enataian architecture is unusually European compared to its neighbors, due to its original inhabitants. In fact, the capital building is the Enataian National Hall, built in the style of the original Norse beer halls, and often used in the fashion that beer halls were designed. However, major cities have taken on an American style of architecture in its skyscrapers and such. The capital city of Bellevue is based mainly upon American architectural styles.

Language

Enatai has always been very diverse, leading to three different official languages: English, Spanish, and Bellevuian. English is spoken mostly by Northern and Northwestern Enataians, while Spanish is spoken in the south and the southeast. Spanglish, a mixture of Spanish and English, is spoken in midwestern Enatai. Finally, Bellevuian is spoken by 13% of the population, and the two dialects are spoken throughout the entire nation. Most Enataians know at least two languages, and at least two years of foreign language classes are required to get into most good colleges. Bellevue Community College, the country's oldest college (and considered the best by just about everyone) requires no less than three years, and four or five are usually expected.

Warring

Enatai takes a pacifist stance on almost any wars except for those within the region. If it is within the region, Enatai will typically step in and stop the fighting if necessary. Enatai's navy is the best in the region, as is its Air Force, and the Department of Technologies constantly supplies the military with the latest technology. Names usually stem back to the original Norse, although translated into English. For example, the most popular type of Battleship is named the Longboat after the ones the Vikings used, fitting as this particular Battleship can also ram other ships, as the original Longboats did.

Economy

Enatai's current economic situation has been criticized by some as "nonexistant," "useless," and "pitiful," but the truth is that Enatai's economy is actually well and good, if not a bit more regulated and on the down-low than other countries. Indeed, the largest city in Enatai, Bellevue, is considered its most beautiful specifically for the fantastic downtown. Enatai's economic power stems mainly from its technological advances, although southern Enatai is focused mainly on privatized Arms Manufacturing, a practice discouraged by the government but one that the government is not willing to give up anyone's civil rights for. Enatai, though considered a mostly Libertarian country, has a trade tariff of 3% on all goods entering the country.
