Entsteig (Russian: Э́тстег, tr.: Ètsteg), or the Holy Kingdom of Entsteig (Russian: Свтейше́е Короле́вство Этстегий, tr.: Svtejŝee Korolevstvo Ètstegiy) is a constitutional and parliamentary monarchy located in the land of Provincia. As an island nation, it has a strong maritime tradition and is known for its generally stable political history.

History

This history of Entsteig, originally an autonomous Russian colony, is generally thought to have begun in the tenth century, where explorers from Muscovy established a small community. The land was forbidding and cold, so few explorers colonised the port and other areas. Their trading post became known as Steigi'sk, Entsteig's national capital. Steigi'sk broke away from Muscovy sometime in the 15th century, where the rulers of Muscovy dismissed it as a backwater town and subsequently ignored it. Ivan the Contemptuous, a highly arrogant man, became the king of Steigi'sk and sought to improve the Steigian reputation. Under Ivan the Contemptuous (Ivan I), ethnic Russians from many cities travelled to Entsteig, where the south of the island was slowly colonised. There, the land was found to be highly varied, with deserts and thick forests.

Entsteig was thought to be ahead of its time by many historians. King Ivan III, a compassionate individual, banned serfdom in 1576. Unfortunately, he was also killed fighting against the marauding Eisenvolk, a Germanic tribe. The Eisenvolk subdued the larger country in 1589 and imposed tyrannical and racist rule against the Steigian Russians. They were ousted in a bloody and furious uprising in 1634, where the Steigians formed a new government which waged war against the consistently-attacking Eisenvolk in the Steigian Wars of Defence. The Steigian Wars of Defense were fought sporadically between 1637 and 1712, at which the Eisenvolk were thoroughly defeated but left unconquered.

Entsteig was affected by the Reformation in the 16th century and officially changed to Protestantism. This sparked the first civil war in Entsteig [recorded, at least], and millions of Roman Catholics left the massive country. The fighting subsided in 1613, when Vladimir IV skilfully mediated between the two denominations. Many of the Roman Catholics eventually turned to Protestantism, even though some more left the country.

Entsteig became a constitutional monarchy in 1834, when Yerik II let himself be bound by the restraints of a constitution to conform with Great Britain. Yerik II was an Anglophile, and some of his lasting legacies were the widespread use of British English in Entsteig and British cultural influences. Entsteig has undergone few changes since then, with the exception of further modernisation and the like. For example, Yerik II also made sure that all forms of Christianity were practiced without hindrance. The Steigian Orthodox Church also was able to reconvert people back to its cause, no small feat. It remains dominant to this day.

Upon the accession of King Hedrik II to the throne of Entsteig in 1992, Entsteig has continued to grow prosperous and populous. However, the peace of 2002 exploded into conflict in the capital of Steigi'sk, where several terrorist attacks rocked the nation. These invaders, trying to destroy the government, were discovered to be funded by several Eisenvolk states and a few other terrorist nations. A coalition of nations (including Durtistan and Muktar, among others) forced them out with a significant amount of military force. This ended peacefully.

However, yet another attack occurred in 2004, this time by neo-pagan anarcho-environmentalist terrorists in Entsteig. With the serious tension towards Jaghur, Karchosia, and their allies, the government found it difficult to effectively combat the threat(s). The Anti-Entsteig Alliance quickly fell apart due to a complete lack of basis for attacking. The former members surprisingly turned to Entsteig and aided them in defeating the terrorists, although they were ejected with haste and suspicion afterwards.

Anxious for another war against Entsteig, Jaghur, Karchosia, and their puppets wrote up an outrageous ultimatum against Entsteig, this time with the aid of Read lots and its puppets. Demanding demilitarisation, trade concessions, and other articles with the only alternative being war, the government of Entsteig prepared for war to defend itself. Pressure from other nations against the new and baseless Anti-Entsteig Alliance destroyed it, and they fled to lick their wounds. Once again, no combat resulted, although mobilisation increased in Entsteig.

Jaghur has entered a much more cordial relationship with Entsteig now, as opposed to the outright hostility from years past. Now, Jaghur and several other nations are sending teams of scientists to Entsteig in its proposed expedition to the Ruthen Tundra to explore the wildlife and other properties. Today, Entsteig is a massive, powerful, prosperous, and populous country. Under Hedrik II, it began to play a major role in world politics, offering a compassionate Christian view not afraid to use force if necessary.

Recently, spies from Read lots and Karchosia have been seen disrespectfully vandalising the official histories of Entsteig. The government has demanded that they cease their actions, but it has only elicited more vandalism.

Politics

Entsteig is a constitutional and parliamentary monarchy. The current head of state, the king, is King Hedrik II. The Steigian government possesses three branches: The executive, legislative, and judicial branches. King Hedrik II (real name Kliment II Pavlovich Yakovlev) is aided by his Ministry, which is composed of:

  • Ivan Fyodorovich Ryleyev (Defence Minister)
  • Professor Andrei Mikhailovich Morozov (Education Minister)
  • Grand Duke Igor Ivanovich Yakovlev (Environment Minister)
  • Sergei Grigorivich Petrov (Finance Minister)
  • Sidor Petrovich Moskvina (Interior Minister)
  • Dr. Boris Nikolaevich Nosova (Health Minister)
  • Yuri Aleksandrovich Yudenich (Justice Minister)

A guide to the Steigian economy will be coming soon.

Demographics

The Steigian people are fairly varied, although they do share a number of common characteristics.

Population

Entsteig is composed of roughly five billion people.

Most of these figures are fairly rough and are estimates.

Birth rate: 7.7 births/1,000 population

Death rate: 6.5 deaths/1,000 population

Net migration rate: 1.0 migrants/1,000 population

Life expectancy:

Total population: 79.2 years

Male: 73.8 years

Female: 84.6 years

Ethnic Groups

The Steigian people are primarily of East Slavic origin, mostly Russians. About 88% of Steigians are Russians, with 6% Germans and 5% French. The other one percent is of scattered different ethnic groups, such as Jews.

Languages

Russian and English are the primary languages. All citizens can speak both. Some provinces will have different proportions of ethnic makeup, meaning that said provinces will have different official languages. The small German and French ethnicities generally can speak their own languages.

Religions

Entsteig is a very religious country, with 58% of the population being closely affiliated with the Steigian Orthodox Church, 20% Protestant, and 12% Roman Catholic. Two percent of people are Jewish, generally Orthodox. The remaining 8% possesses various neo-pagan and atheistic beliefs which are hostile to Christianity. Approximately 89% attends church more than once a week.

More information will be coming later.

Foreign relations

Traditionally, Entsteig has been inward-looking and localised in its foreign relations because of its relatively isolated location. However, the nearby Fernstahlinian Empire engaged Entsteig in an economic rivalry during the 18th century in an attempt to secure a better trade position for itself. Once Fernstahlinian belligerence escalated, Entsteig broke from isolationism and looked for allies in the greater regional area to protect from possible attack. International reception was fairly enthusiastic, as many countries had already had great economic ties with Entsteig.

The great watershed was the unsuccessful Bolshevist revolt following the Russian October Revolution, which convinced the nation of the danger posed to the free world by communism. Its friendly stance toward nations in the great oceanic area helped to prevent the area from falling under the red curtain. Following the end of the Cold War, foreign relations became normalised, although great tension soon followed. In the opening years of the twenty-first century, the two harsh and demanding ultimatums suddenly forced upon Entsteig by Jaghur and Karchosia almost forced the nation to defend itself against possible invasion. When the incident blew over, Entsteig began researching and developing nuclear weapons to deter other countries from possibly similar incidents.

Traditionally, Entsteig has made very few military pacts and still does not intend to unconditionally support any country. Nevertheless, Mertees-Jerdon has developed a close relationship with Entsteig, presumably to protect both from possible aggression from Fernstahl. The last year saw Steigian involvement in the defence of Shapren against the communist rogue nation Yassur.

Military of Entsteig

Overview

The military of Entsteig, better known as the Royal Steigian Armed Forces, is composed of the Royal Steigian Army, the Royal Steigian Navy, the Royal Steigian Air Force, the Royal Steigian Marines, and the Royal Steigian Coast Guard. Though military spending had fallen sharply after the end of the Cold War, the nation's booming economy allows the military budget to still remain formidable. The high spending on relatively small numbers of personnel, research, design and procurement of defence equipment means that the Royal Steigian Armed Forces are one of the most powerful and technologically advanced forces in the greater oceanic region. Presently, the force is composed of only 2,000,000 active and reserve troops. The military is professional or all-volunteer, though conscription may be implemented in case of an emergency. In peacetime, the military is under control of the Ministry of Defence, though the king reserves the right to be Commander-in-Chief. Women are not allowed to serve in combat, though they may be relegated to engineering and other auxiliary positions.

Because of a large budget surplus, recently the Royal Steigian Armed Forces have begun heavily recruiting. The cited goal is to double the size of the overall military. Though this may sound daunting, it is not a problem in reality because previously the military had given a temporary rejection to over half of those who had wished to enlist. Those rejected are given higher priority in cases of reenlistment.

Current strength

The Holy Kingdom of Entsteig fields one of the most powerful, technologically advanced, and comprehensive armed forces in the world. Entsteig has one of the highest military expenditures in the general region thanks to a powerful economy. Because of wide-ranging and comprehensive Steigian capabilities, the Royal Steigian Armed Forces are capable of acting unilaterally, as was de facto during the defence of Shapren. However, the military is also well-suited in acting as part of a coalition, considering the mobility of the air and naval forces. Only 2,000,000 troops are currently either in active service or reserve status throughout the five branches.

Royal Steigian Army

The Royal Steigian Army traces its roots back to the men who protected the city-state of Steigi'sk in medieval times. Like all armies, it has the primary responsibility for land-based military operations. The Army's current chief-of-staff is Marshal Ivan Pavlovich Samsonov, who has had extensive experience as commander. The Royal Steigan Army currently is composed of approximately 450,000 active soldiers with 600,000 in the reserve.

Royal Steigian Navy

As an island, Entsteig has a very long maritime tradition. As such, it is imperative that an adequate navy can protect Steigian waters. Widely considered to be extremely powerful, the Navy's capabilities were shown during the defence of Shapren. One of the largest navies in the world, the Navy is composed of 150,000 active sailors and aviators with a further 200,000 in reserve. The Royal Steigian Navy is the most well-known of all Steigian branches of military service.

Royal Steigian Air Force

Approximately 100,000 active and 175,000 reserve airmen compose the base of the Air Force. Though not very large, the figure is misleading, as all other branches operate aerial vehicles, with Naval Aviation being an example. The planes in service are highly potent and modern; technological superiority appears to be the Royal Steigian Air Force's aim. Recently, the Air Force has begun to build up more planes and is actively recruiting people to join. Like the Navy, the Air Force has great power-projection capabilities.

Royal Steigian Marines

Essentially shock troops and experts in amphibious warfare, the Royal Steigian Marines number about 125,000 in active service and 75,000 in the reserve. Marines often spearhead attacks until more permanent forces take over. Marines are trained even more rigorously than the rest of military.

Royal Steigian Coast Guard

The Coast Guard numbers 75,000 and 50,000 in active and reserve statuses. Its primary duty is to patrol Steigian waters and to mount search-and-rescue operations. The Coast Guard works closely with the civilian police in matters near land. The Coast Guard is capable of being deployed to war zones to evacuate refugees or military personnel.
