The pilot, which will be two and a half hours long at a cost of R50 million, is currently filming for a January premiere. The other 8 empisodes in the season will be filmed in December and January. The pilot, the most expensive in TV history, was written by Paul Haggis (Million Dollar Baby, Crash, Casino Royale) from the orginal source material take from the ship's log and crew's diaries. Executive Producer Steven Speilberg offered the project to Ridley Scott, who apparently jumped at the chance to add more depth to the universe depicted in the 2002 Friendly Aliens film of the same name. Whereas the film had a little over two hours to depict the entire journey, 'Exodus' will have 9 episodes with which to show all the events (some not previously documented on screen) that occured over the journey's length.

The cast is entirely native Friendly Aliens, with the pirates and Alpha characters being played by a mixture of human actors and CG enhancements. The actors are not the same ones from the film, which has provoked outrage from some fans of the original. However, RBS and Criterion remain convinced that the legacy of the film will remain untouched, "we're just trying to colour in some of the missing pieces of this painting" said one executive at RBS.

For the dramatic space battles, including the Battle of Teal Arch, which forms the climax of the pilot ('Paradise Lost, Exodux Begun'), Industrial Light and Magic was employed. The effects house have been working hard to make sure everything looks good, even hiring some ex-Stellar Guard personnel to get accurate descriptions of how the ships in Triangulum looked, flew and fought.

With a budget of almost R175 million for the entire 9 episode run, RBS and Criterion are hoping they are backing a winner in 'Exodus'. Exodus is a major new televsion mini-series charting the story of the Friendly Aliens 'Starsearcher' and its journey from Triangulum to Earth. The series was comissioned by RBS and Criterion, two tv networks that have expressed longing to work with each other on a large project for some time.

However, with the amount of talent lined up over the course of the series (both James Cameron and Guillermo del Toro are poised to direct episodes), this is a series that 'surely cannot fail' in the eyes of the Dan Holin from Empire Magazine.
