The Federation of Progressive Democrats (Pacitalian: Federazione dello Democratimu Progressivanto) is a major political party in the Democratic Capitalist Republic of Pacitalia. The party is currently in power, in a grand coalition with the Pacitalian Social Coalition, though it held control of the Senatoro Federali in the October 2006 elections. The FPD governed Pacitalia for 18 straight years (1988-2006) and 63 years within the last century. Its fiscally conservative but socially libertarian ideology puts it in line with a majority of Pacitalians and thus it is widely known as "Pacitalia's natural governing party".

History

The FPD has been in existence for over a century, but only as its current form since last year. It's been argued that the FPD has produced some of the best governments Pacitalia has seen, from Rabastano Pietro Grazzo's 12-year term in the mid-1950s, to the last government led by Francesco Santo Ragazzoa government under Timothy Ell that lasted from 1996 to January 2006, and a short, scandal-ridden one under Constantino Sorantanali that resulted in election defeat in the October vote.

Pacifist Party (1902-89)

The Pacifist Party was formed in May 1902 when Conservative delegates unhappy with the party's move to the right and not willing to join the centrist Liberals formed their own third party called the Pacifists. They were not strictly anti-war, but they promoted peace, diplomacy and economic strength. That mix caught on well with Pacitalian voters and within three years of the party's founding, Pacitalians elected the Pacifists to a majority with Medinis Sorprantakis as the prime minister. Sorprantakis led the country well, but tried to seek a third term and failed as the Liberals regained power by two seats over a tough Pacifist campaign.

The Pacifists did well in their first time as Official Opposition, against the Liberal government of Luigi Sfra, and after Sfra announced he would not seek a third term, Marco Sant'Allardo, who had become leader of the Pacifists in 1919, quickly stepped in, mounted a solid campaign based on accountability and transparency of government, and earned 16 years in power. He was followed by Rabastano Pietro Grazzo, Portului Parderescu and Grasiru Damescu in holding power for 37 of 44 years from 1921. The Pacifists were Official Opposition to the Liberals when that party held power for twenty straight years between 1965 and 1985, but were embarrassed for no apparent reason at the polls in the 1985 election when Giorgio Cassata and his doomed Conservative government came to power. In 1988, voters were angered and shocked by the Conservatives' behaviour but not ready to return to the Liberals, so the Pacifists were elected under Francesco Santo Ragazzo in 1988.

Capitalist Party (1989-2004)

By 1989, party members were feeling that the name "Pacifist" did not accurately represent the party's policy, which had become notably less pacifist over time. Although the party was not in favour of war, they did relent in that no longer was it a bad thing to go war, but that if necessary, then so be it. Most of the party seemed to favour their current economic beliefs and they voted to change their name to the Capitalist Party in 1989. Under Santo Ragazzo and, later, under Ell, the party's policies became so well received that it is hard to argue against the assertion that the Capitalists became the party of parties within the country. However, opposition leaders criticised the Capitalists for being socially uncompassionate, something that Prime Minister Ell himself had noticed, and thus the topic of a second name change was brought up in 2003.

Federation of Progressive Democrats (2004-present)

After the selection of the current name, the party began its policy of "balanced nationalism", a mix of pure capitalism and libertarianism. With the demise of the Conservatives in 1988, the FPD has grown to become the only major party of the right (with the Greens becoming the major centrist party and the PSC forming the representation of left-of-centre Pacitalians). The party selected Constantino Sorantanali to succeed Timothy Ell at the leadership convention in Mandragora on 28th December, 2005.
