The flag of Mikitivity consists of three equally size horizontal bars of blue, black, and white. Adopted in 1834, long after the formation of the Confederated City States of Mikitivity, several Mikitivity cantons and cities had previously been using their own flags prior to the adoption of a national flag.

History

Most of the communities in Mikitivity predate the formation of the current confederation, and have used various flags and coats of arms over the years. Originally cities would have a coat of arms, but the flags flown over a city were used to indicate the allgeniance or ownership of that city. Since many cities would switch alliances, cities not only switched flags frequently, but the designs of most flags were simple solid colors and of a pennant design that could be easily flown on city watch towers.

In 1767 the first nation-wide referrendum was held in each of Mikitivity's cantons to consider the adoption of a national flag. A number of designs had previously been used by various officials representing the City States. Typically these earlier national symbols were variations of local cantonal flags from where the officials were from. Since the most affluent and influencial canton was Miervatia, its tri-colored flag most often was associated not with the canton itself, but with the national government.

A series of 14 elections were held between 1767 and 1834 seeking unanimous agreement on a national flag. The 1767 election included 7 different designs, with an agreement between the cantons being that a winning flag must achieve a supermajority in order to be selected. No one design achieved a supermajority in any of the first 13 elections, but various designs were removed and added to the cantonal elections. Originally the support for the flag switched from a simple design featuring a white background and a diagonal grey stripe, to simply adopting the then current Miervatian flag design.

Though it took over 50 years, eventually the Miervatian flag was adopted as the national flag. After this happened, the Miervatian flag was altered in order to differentiate it from the national flag with the addition of a gray "iron" cross centered on the flag.
