The Flotta della Marina Militare (FMM, Military Marine's Fleet) is composed above all from different models of ship like aircraft carrier, warship, submarines and transport ship. The aircraft carrier constitute a valid tactical support because can carry the air fleet everywhere. Also the ship for transportation and reconnaissance used by the Esercito di Terra are part of the FMM, the command is entrusted in delegacy.

Warship

At present the FMM is based on four fundamental types of vessels, fruit of the military plan of armament undertaken towards the end of the 50's. They do part of the FMM also different classes of boats or obsolete models, but the true point of force is these four classes built with a modular logic that did in manner that are had a lot communes interchangeable characteristic.

Old Models Warship

Mm old models.GIF

The old models of FMM's warship are still used like support ships or for light operations, but mainly are used for training and like aid for scientific missions. The main models are: the battleship MM CRZ Ferro, the destroyer MM CTP Audace and the corvette MM CVT Custode, all built towards the end of the 40's.

Future Prototype Warship

Towards the end of the PAM-2K, the MM ordered the development of new warship for its fleet, in prediction of the substitution of the present models. The research center and the consortium of national industries presented varied futurist models with a new philosophy of attack/defence. The presented projects propose three new classes of corvette, two new classes of destroyers and the introduction of two classes of frigates. Is in project also the construction of a new class of cruiser, but all information are classified.

The Sabina class supercarriers are a line of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers in service in FMM. This carrier is built by the Sabina 60 Consorzio Navale, a partnership of Nasuti's naval industries and government.

Sabina, the lead ship of the class, was commissioned in 1961: successive 5 ships carry the name of the regions of the homonymous island (Riegne, Feltrin, Rizzacorno, Villa Ripa, Gaeta).

By tonnage, Sabina class were the largest class of carriers ever built by Nasuti.

With the production of PAM-2K's carrier, the Sabina class finished its productive cycle and the unity progressively will be replaced.

PAM-2K

Pam-2k accordo.png

To the end of the 90’s the FMM undertook the Programma PM-X5 (Programma Portaerei della Marina X5, Marine Aircraft Carrier Program X5) for the construction of new aircraft carrier in substitution of the previous fleet, whose examples go back to the 60’s. Today the joint venture composed by the Princedom and some of the greater technological industries of the country began to produce a new class of carrier called PAM-2K (Programma Portaerei della Marina 2000, Marine Aircraft Carrier Program 2000). The first 5 ship was realized in 2006 and further ten ships of the class will enter service in slice of three carrier every two years.

PAM-2K Design

The PAM-2K class carriers will have about 100,000t of displacement and will have about 500 to 900 fewer crew members. It is estimated that the new carrier technologies will lead to a 30% reduction in maintenance requirement and further crew workload reduction will be achieved through higher levels of automation. The other main differences in operational performance compared to the past carrier are increased sortie rates at 160 sorties a day (compared to 140 a day), a weight and stability allowance over the 50-year operational service life of the ship, and increased (by approximately 150% ) electrical power generation and distribution to sustain the ship's advanced technology systems. Another key performance requirement is interoperability.

Aircraft Carrier Hull

The hull design is very similar to that of the current carriers with the same number of decks. The island is smaller and moved further towards the aft of the ship. The island has a composite mast with planar array radars, a volume search radar operating at S band and a multi-function radar at X band and also carries the stern-facing joint precision approach and landing system. The aircraft carrier traditionally carries the flag officer and 70 staff of the carrier battle group. The flag bridge which has previously been accommodated in the carrier's island has been relocated to a lower deck in order to minimize the size of the island. The ship's internal configuration and flight deck designs have been significantly changed. The lower decks incorporate a flexible rapidly reconfigurable layout allowing different layouts and installation of new equipment in command, planning and administration areas. The requirement to build in weight and stability allowance will accommodate the added weight of new systems that will be installed over the 50-year operational life of the ship. The removal of one aircraft elevator unit and reducing the number of hangar bays from three to two have contributed to a reduction of the weight of the PAM-2K.

Systems and Weapons

The carrier will incorporate all new technologies including a new multi-function radar system, volume search radar and open architecture information network. The carrier will be armed with all type of conventional missiles (Anti-aircraft, Sea-to-ground, Anti-ship) and with a new type of versatile drone missile against high-speed, highly maneuverable anti-ship missiles. The aircraft carrier also can accommodate on board a system for nuke or neutron missile’s launching. For short range defence, the carrier will be armed with 5× 30 mm Martello cannon and 10× 20 mm Pioggia di Fuoco gatling gun, both type wit automatic munitions refueling. The carriers PAM-2K are arranged to host the specify of new armaments system that is in experimentation in the laboratories of research: this armaments are based on high energy electromagnetic fields.

Aircraft

The flight deck has a relocated and smaller island, and there are three deck edge elevators. Deck extensions also increase the aircraft parking areas. The aircraft service stations are located near the 18 refueling and rearming stops. The aircraft launch system is electromagnetic and uses a linear electromagnetic accelerator motor. It is planned that system will replace the current steam catapults because this technology offers the potential benefit of finer aircraft acceleration control, which leads to lower stresses in the aircraft and pilots and provides a slower launch speed for unmanned air vehicles and allows a wider window of wind-over-deck speed required for the launch sequence. Has been realized also an advanced turbo-electric arrestor gear: the electro-magnetic motor applies control to the synthetic arrestor cable to reduce the maximum tensions in the cable and reduce the peak load on the arrestor hook and on the aircraft fuselage.

Aircraft Weapons

The flow of weapons to the aircraft stops on the flight deck has been upgraded. The ship carries stores of missiles and cannon rounds for fighter aircraft, bombs and air-to-surface missiles for strike aircraft, and torpedoes and depth charges for anti-submarine warfare aircraft. Weapons elevators take the weapons systems from the magazines to the weapons handling and weapons assembly areas on the 02-level deck (below the flight deck) and express weapons elevators are installed between the handling and assembly areas and the flight deck. The deployment of all-up-rounds, which are larger, rather than traditional weapons requiring assembly will require double-height magazines and store rooms and will also impact on the level of need for weapons assembly facilities. The MM outlined a requirement for a minimum 150% increase in the power-generation capacity for the PAM-2K carrier compared to the current carriers. The increased power capacity is needed for the four electro-magnetic aircraft launchers and for future systems such as directed energy weapons.

Propulsion

PAM-2K adopt the advanced nuclear propulsion system and a zonal electrical power distribution system, upgradable with new prototype mobile nuclear reactor.
