Current State

Franberry boasts a high-tech and powerful military and the society is massively militarized. A 2 year term of compulsory military service begins at age 18 (although it can be pushed back up to 22, these exceptions mostly have to do with education). Conscripts are not part of the FAF, but rather, the Civil Defense Force.

The total personnel in the Franberrian Armed Forces(FAF) is 8 million.

502 million memebres can be called up if nessesary (although this would cripple the economy)

The FAF is made up of 5 branches:

The Black Guard: The very elite of the Franberrian Armed Forces, whos duty is to protect the Emperor at all costs. The Guard contains: Army Units (The Ground Guard;)Air Force units (The Air Guard); and Naval Units (the Naval Guard). It employs 1 million men in total.

The Peoples' Army of Franberry: The biggest part of the FAF, has 4 million volunteers.

The Peoples' Air Force of Franberry: The air force, like the Black Guard, is a volunteer-only organization, which currently has 1 million men in uniform.

The Peoples' Navy of Franberry: Currently, it has 2 personnel.

Space Command: Mostly in the research, exploration and experimentation role. Franberry has a small amount of satelite weapons in space, some which contain nuclear warheads.

The Special Operation Command: The SOC deals with spec. ops. and experimentary units.

The Civil Defense Force Is a completely different organ. This is were conscripts are trained, and in times of need, the people would be called up and serve in CDF units.

History of the Military

When the settlers first arrived, there was little need for a military, as the aboriginal tribes were friendly.

A police force was established to maintain law and order, but there was still no need for a military.

Many years after the creation of Jamminberry, in the year 1600 A.H., 200 exploreres were sent west, to chart the western part of the continent and establish a land link to Jamminberry. After exploring for a month, the party was ambushed by natives The Fotkorl, who killed about half the group, and took them to their village. There they were tortured and deliberatly starved. After about a month of imprisionment, a group of 20 men escaped, although only 15 made it back to civillised territory.

Upon hearing these news, the Emperor, His Holyness Horlont Jaffir the II, called for the formation of an army, to spearhead a massive colonisation effort to the west. The resulting conflict would become what is officialy known as the Wars of Western Expansion (1601 - 1623 A.H.)(also known as: The Aboriginal War, The Western War, The Indian Wars)

The opening battles of this conflict showed how little the Franberry - Jamminberry alliance knew about war. The first thrusts into Fotkorl territory were met with failure, as units quickly retrated back into civillised territory. The only things that were saving the army from total destruction was steel weapons (swords and muskets), but apart from that the Fotkorl had more men, better knowledge of the area and war and some excellent leaders. About a year of defeats passed before the Army's first true victory over the Fotkorl, The Battle of Janpol, were the army, re-trained by foreing experts smashed a much larger Fotkorl host. After the battle, the army started to expand slowly into native territorry, with colonist establishing towns and cities not far behind the army's sweep. It would take 18 more years, some more defeats and much more victories until the last symbol of the strength of the Fotkorl fell, their capital of Vaan. The Battle of Vaan was a grueling 2 month process, in the spring of 1621, which singalled victory for the Franberry-Jamminberry alliance.

2 years of mopping up followed, until all the natives were either allied, assimilated or killed.

Ever since their humiliating defeat at the begginning of The Wars of Southern Expansion, the military has striven to reamin as a stae-of-the-art, supremelly well trained and extremly powerful force.

In between the years 1650-1950 the military lead colonists into unexplored lands, and carried them across water to faraway islands and continents.

After 1950, the army has stopped establishing colonies, and has had to turn to defend from enemies that lure inside of Franberry. Many extremist groups have resently sprung up in Franberry, aided by foreing enemies and filled with new immigrants, some with radical ideas. What were inicially small bands of rebels has very recently turned into a large rebellion in the north of the country. Although the percentage of the rebels or people with rebelious feelings against the population was very small 0.1% (the whole country), they were very well armed and inflicted thousands of casualties.

The FAF is now involved in Soviet Arms Dealers, as a peacekeeping force.
