History

The Free States of Gaia was founded in September of 2004 by a group of disgruntled refugee nations from the region NationStates (not to be confused with the game NationStates). The conflict was a result of tensions between the nations that desired more conflict in the region and the general majority that wished things to remain the way they were. Tensions culminated in the now infamous Evestria-Niall I conflict between the two nations which brought the entire region on the brink of total war.

Having tasted the excitement of RP, many nations desired to have more conflicts and scenarios, but the regional delegate and his "brownie biters" as they were labeled refused. Rather than try to confront the majority of the well established region, a dozen or so states broke away to form the FSoG. A massive recruiting push caused the number of member nations to skyrocket to well over 400 in a period of just a few months, shoving the fledgling region onto the world scene where it maintains its role as one of the largest player created regions in the entire game.

Current status

The region has built upon its principles of independence of its nations and providing a free and open environment for nations to engage in creative and fun RP, which has included civil wars, genocides, epidemics, embargoes, and a list of other diplomatic incidents. While several nations are clearly major players on the regional scene, the stage is evenly shared with even the newest of members, who take the opportunities presented in Gaia's many Galas to introduce themselves around the leading nations before taking over the roles themselves.

The FSoG has organised into a semi-government, with a regional security council responsible for maintaining inter-regional relations. The forums are run by a secretive oligarchy of moderaters, who organise themselves into the regions most secretive government posts, but true to the factbook entry, do not devolve into a tyrannical state, maintaining a high level of personal freedom for the member nations. After the initial recruiting push, however, memberhsip has stagnated and started to decline as more and more nations simply cease to exist rather than move out. On December 29, 2004, the population dipped to below 400 nations for the first time. The population is expected to continue to decline until the next recruiting push, which is schedualed to take place soon, after the region's top-noch recruiters finally recover from the time and effort they put into the last effort.
