Freedom Fighters History

Freedom Fighters has an extremely eventful and dramatic history, filled with conflict, intrigue, betrayal, and triumph. Since its beginning as the Pacific Army, Freedom Fighters has undergone two significant transformations to become the army that it is today. What follows is a commentary of what sparked these transformations and how they led to the Freedom Fighters of today.

The Pacific Army

The Freedom Fighters Army is the third evolution of the region defending army originally known as The Pacific Army (PA). The Pacific Army was formed by natives of the Pacific region around August 2003 in response to increasing invasion activity in regions around the NationStates world. It was closely aligned with the Pacific delegacy at that time and considered a military extension of the Pacific region with the express purpose of lending support to other regions under attack by invaders.

For the first few weeks of its existance, the Pacific Army fulfilled its purpose and went about its mission of defending regions under threat of invasion. Not long after the PA's inception, late August 2003, a new delegacy rose to power in the Pacific and, upon seizing the position, proceeded to evict all its opponents and detractors from the region, including members of the PA. The new regime, called the New Pacific Order (NPO) and headed by a nation named Francos Spain, imposed a strict code of law over the nations of the Pacific and began stomping out any attempts to challenge the new delegacy, thereby eliminating any competition for the delegate position. This aggressive coup by the NPO led to the exile of the PA from its home region and several months of intense conflict and bitter disputes followed between the nations of the PA and the nations aligned with the NPO.

The tumultuous events in the Pacific reverberated throughout NationStates, drawing in many other regions and groups to the fray and polarizing much of the NationStates world. Several attempts were made to overthrow the new delegacy but all were thwarted one way or another. The PA was increasingly alienated from its home region due to the ongoing feud and frequent exchange of barbs and taunts with the NPO. Eventually the PA decided to change its name to the Free Pacific Army. This was prompted in part by the fact that the founder nation of the Pacific Army base region, then PA leader The Savage Lands, was deleted for alleged flaming, but also to symbolize the desire to return home to a free Pacific.

And so the first transformation of the Pacific Army into the Free Pacific Army took shape. The army established a new base region and new forum and began rebuilding the army to its former strength.

The Free Pacific Army

The slight modification to the Pacific Army name also brought a slight change in perspective for the army. The NPO had severed the "umbilical cord" that had previously tied the PA, now The Free Pacific Army (FPA), to the Pacific region. This separation forced the FPA to stand on its own feet and arrive at the realization that it was now an independent army. With this in mind the FPA set about organising itself into a structured army to ensure its survival as a stand alone group. The FPA also forged strong alliances with its friends the Rejected Realms Army (RRA) and RadioFree Pacific (RFP), another Pacific liberationist group, which aided the FPA in continuing its plight. With the new structure firmly in place and positions filled, the FPA returned some of its focus to the mission of region defence. This helped in restoring the FPA's original purpose and provided renewed strength and optimism.

The burning desire of freeing the Pacific still smoldered and many more exiled nations joined the FPA with the shared hope of restoring democracy to their home region. Meanwhile the power of the NPO was growing and its grip on the Pacific tightened. Much of the battle for the Pacific went underground with many spies from both sides attempting to infiltrate the other. The NPO were probing for intelligence that would warn them of planned attempts to retake the delegacy and the FPA were digging for information that would allow them to pull off a successful liberation. The unfortunate side effect of this push for information was that, deep undercover in enemy territory, several nations loyalties were tested. Whether seduced by the apparent power of the NPO, or influenced by their compelling propoganda, some of these nations defected to the other side.

In early January 2004, it was revealed that none other than the supreme commander of the FPA, The Savage Lands, was indeed secretly working with the leader of the NPO in a plot to expand their power into the South Pacific. With his treachery exposed, Savage Lands dealt a further blow to the FPA by ejecting all nations from the FPA base region, thereby executing its destruction. The FPA was sent into a tailspin and teetered on the brink of collapse. With its members dispersed into the Rejected Realms and no clear direction in site, the total ruin of the FPA was imminent.

Fortunately, the FPA structure did not give way under the pressure. The remaining core members of the FPA pulled together and elected a new supreme commander, CrazyGirl. However, the fallout of the previous leader's betrayal had not subsided. A decision on the future of the FPA was needed, and fast, as many members were leaving and breaking off into splinter groups. The idea to merge with the RRA was considered but not followed through. Finally, a decision was made to regroup, once more, under a new name and in a new region.

It was decided that two new groups would be formed, one would be home for former natives of the Pacific and was called The Heart Of the Pacific, the other would be the new army and was called Freedom Fighters. And so, the remaining committed members of the FPA relocated to a new base region called Freedom Fighters, a new forum was created, and the task of rebuilding the army was again at hand.

Freedom Fighters

The new name of Freedom Fighters was quite significant because it no longer contained reference to the Pacific region. This meant that Freedom Fighters was now once and for all a completely independent and autonomous army, no longer tied to a major region. With the new identity, Freedom Fighters returned most of its efforts to the primary mission of region defence and thus began its illustrious career. Freedom Fighters began to tally up a dazzling record of defence victories. A new supreme commander named Hrmmm was elected following the resignation of CrazyGirl and the success of the army continued. Although the ties to the Pacific region were shed, there still remained some lingering ghosts. Several nations, highly respected within the army, revealed themselves to be spies and regretfully exited the army. Despite these betrayals, the army remained strong and continued to thrive.

Freedom Fighters entered another era with the resignation of Hrmmm and the appointment of Talkos as the new supreme commander. Freedom Fighters strengthened its ties with the defender community at large, with its increased participation in the Alliance Defense Network.

Today, Freedom Fighters has evolved yet again, with Talkos taking a well-deserved retirement, and the appointment of Get On It as the new supreme commander. The hope of restoring democracy to the Pacific still exists and will never be extinguished, however Freedom Fighters has risen above the dark days of the past and, like a bird forced out of its nest, has spread its wings to full glory and taken to the open skies of NationStates, a shining symbol of freedom, for all to look upon and admire...
