The GWS.102 Vidofnir missile series began as a quasi-ballistic missile development of the GWS.82 Triton missile series designed to make better use of the technologies developed for the GWS.97 Ahab, such as the trajectory shaped vehicles (TSV) and common aero vehicle (CAV) warheads. Strengthening the GWS.102 for its quasi-ballistic trajectory reduces the range of the missile significantly, but diminishes the capability of the opposing force to respond with either space-based or surface-based anti-ballistic missile systems. Ballistic versions of the missile, notably those designed for anti-satellite warfare/space interception or satellite launching, are lighter and have a greater potential reach.
The GWS.102 series entered limited domestic production in early 2007, primarily for land-based fixed and rail batteries, but with some allocation for submarine-launched missiles and for the proposed Lethe- and Tyr-classes.

Conventional Payload
The TSV is a unitary penetrator warhead designed to cruise at high hypersonic speeds for a long period before engaging its target, often at high angle of attack to reduce the target's defensive response time as well as the TSV's radar signature. (As the TSV would likely be perceptibly hot in any case, the design team considered the effect on the vehicle's infra-red signature as immaterial.) Retractable aerostrakes provide directional changes, and a solid rocket provides an additional push for the warhead's terminal velocity. The ceramic tile outer body of the reentry vehicle(s) protects it/them from re-entry as well as generating chaff as its outer layer erodes. In order to reduce fears of nuclear retaliation, the warhead is sheathed in tungsten rather than depleted uranium (DU), which may trigger a radiological alarm. Tungsten's thermal conductivity may offer an additional psychological impact to the missile; an observer reviewing a video of a GWS.102 test thought it was like watching Lucifer falling from Heaven.
The CAV warhead, fitted with more conventional aerodynamic surfaces (wings and fins) may travel a longer distance than the TSV albeit at slower hypersonic speed. It may carry submunitions, such as anti-radar weapons, as well.
