Lady Galadriël Táralóm nos Círdan (more affectionately known as Galadriël) is the Elvish Prime Minister of Knootoss. She is a hardline member of the conservative RCPK and the figurehead for a brand of politics sometimes associated - mostly by her opponents - with the Order of the Invisible Hand. Her favourite policies involve vastly reduced government spending, privatization and increased Defence spending combined with a pro-active foreign policy based on defending 'Knootian values'. She enjoys huge popularity amongst many Knootians for being one of the most outspoken and visionary leaders in contemporary Knootian politics and she is especially popular amongst the nations sizable Elvish minority.

However, Galadriël is also seen as a highly ideological and divisive leader, making such a controversial decisions as using military action against Tanah Burung, replacing the progressive income tax system with a unique sales-based tax and leaving the United Nations after disagreements with the 'Law of the Seas' resolution over matters of extraterritoriality and fishing quotas. In foreign relations, Galadriël started such initiatives as KIST to promote closer bonds between potential friends. She is also seen as an especially staunch defender of warm relations with Elvish and more capitalist nations such as Menelmacar.

Early history

Galadriël was born 750 years ago as the granddaughter of the famous Círdan the shipwright. She emigrated from her homeland to Knootoss during that countries industrial revolution, eventually becoming a very succesful businesswoman leading her own corporation. She was mostly involved in business life untill the late twentieth century. Seeking new challenges, she went into politics for the Conservative Party which is nowadays known as the RCPK. She sided against Dick Tator during the Shadow War along with another group of disgruntled moderate conservatives and became a member of the RCPK split-off group that survived the war and the subsequent (bloodless) political 'purge'.

She became as state-secretary of foreign affairs after a political row where she replaced a Green in what was otherwise a left-wing coalition (Van der Laan I - see that entry for reasons behind her appointment.) She was seen as very influential in the Foreign Ministry as state-secretary, often using SLP support for her more conservative foreign policy objectives. She was elected by the RCPK as leader and candidate for Prime Minister in the elections after the van der Laan II cabinet. She managed to win these elections and make the RCPK the largest party in the Knootian parliament.

First nos Círdan administration

After being confirmed as Prime Minister of Knootoss, she formed an SLP/RCPK coalition. Several reforms she made upon entering office directly increased her powers, such as bringing the AIVD directly under the control of the Prime Minister whereas it had previously been assigned to Foreign Affairs and Defence (which was still headed by her former boss Hans van Mierlo). In general, she also supported bids for increases in power by the more neoliberal ministry of economic affairs at the expense of her former boss. An example of this is permitting the widespread establishment of 'Consulates' as 'Economic Affairs embassies' and the establishment of the EIVD.

But the first nos Círdan administration was more notable for its economic agenda. Despite promises to lower taxes, income tax actually increased during the first years because of vastly higher defence spending. This launched Knootoss from a pacifist non-power into the top 10% of defence spenders per capita. Extensive privatisation programmes, vastly expanded trade relations (because of the establishment of the KIST treaty) and a vast array of pro-business measures did much, however to stimulate economic growth in the short term. During this administration the Order of the Invisible Hand also gained popularity, first in Knootian Colombia and later in Knootoss itself. Some have thought Galadriël to be a member of the Order though others fiercely deny it.

Galadriëls foreign policy during her time as state-secretary had been hawkish and ideological and her initial reforms as Prime Minister were seen as a sign that this policy would continue. However during the first years of her first term the influence of Hans van Mierlo on foreign was probably greater then it had been when she was still part of the Foreign Ministry herself. Both the decision to first support UnAPS militarily when it was attacked by Allanea and the decision to leave UnAPS over charges of the alliance being imperialist were widely acclaimed as having been moral decisions based on notions of an ethical foreign policy. The decision to host the KIST treaty had wide support from virtually all parties. During the One Day War she sent elements of the Knootian Defence Force to Mars in order to prevent Allanea from launching an offensive against Knootoss' Martian allies. This led to an exchange of letters known as the Knootian-Allanean correspondence. The elections were generally uneventful and they did not change the political balance of power.

Second nos Círdan administration

  • Different fiscal policy. New taxation system. (link to bloody thread goes here) Decreasing tax levels and replacing the progressive personal income tax system with a unique sales-based tax.
  • Left the United Nations after disagreements with the 'Law of the Seas' resolution over matters of extraterritoriality and fishing quotas.
    • New development aid policy (see main entry)
  • using military action against Tanah Burungand Operation Tempo Doeloe
