The Galileo class science vessel is part of Bryn Shander's Year 00 Rearmament Plan, and is designed to replace the aging Chronos class science vessel, which was unarmed and required a small fleet of escorts for protection. The Galileo on the other hand, is heavily based on the Suiseiseki class light cruiser and is fully capable of operating independently for years at a time.

Sixteen ships in the class have been completed at Pezun. The first ship of the class, Galileo was made famous by completing a long search and recovery mission to find Imperatrix Ashley I and the other New Havenic refugees in the Sculptor dwarf galaxy.
