Located high in the plateau that bears its name, Gelantipy is the largest town in the Upper Snowy Region.

Under the monarchy it was, after the throne city Milosis (now McKillops Bridge), the second most important town in the kingdom. For it was here that the Royal Family kept its vast lifestock holdings. With the capital moving to First Creek Falls after the 1905 Revolution its importance dwindled, although the beef producing industry continued to maintain links with the government of the Puritanicy.

Following the Liberation of 1941 Gelantipy was one of the last towns to adopt vegetarianism and, with demise of the livestock industry, fell on hard times.

The forests of the Gelantipy Plateau aren't as spectacular as those of the Errinundera Plateau and the trees are not suitable for habitation. Nevertheless, with the population of the district declining the flora and fauna are under much less pressure. With Gelantipy the nearest town to the wild mountain country in the northwest corner of the Rodger region tourism has blossomed in recent years.
