Government
The State President
The State President of East Germany is responsible for the general policies of the state. The State President is commander-in-chief of the armed forces and controls the East German Intelligence and security operations; He alone can declare war. The State President is elected for a life tern by the East German Parliament.
The President
The President of East Germany is acting as the head of the executive, except in matters directly concerned with the office of the State President. All Presidential candidates must be approved by the Parliament prior to running, after which he is elected by universal suffrage to a 6-year term by an absolute majority of votes. The executive branch does not control the Armed Forces.
