Global is a major international current affairs newsmagazine, published weekly by the Global Publishing Company in Kirkenes. Global has a strong reputation for its investigative journalism and is generally considered a trusted source of news and analysis, covering international affairs and politics, the arts, and economic affairs. It is owned by an independent private publishing company.

History

Global was created in 1913 by the newspaper magnate Henry Dawson, who appointed an editorial committee of prominent academics and employed newly-graduated journalism students from the University of Kirkenes, declaring a mission that "intellectuals should use the written word to enlighten and inform the great masses, using simple words, that no one in this country shall be ignorant of the world outside". Initially, the magazine also featured commissioned travel writings as part of this goal to promote global awareness.

In a situation at the time where most publications of its type were aimed at the mercantile and upper classes, focusing on business issues, Global gained great mass appeal, particularly among the middle classes. The magazine also often ran features which sought to explain major issues to its readers and the reasoning behind arguments for and against certain issues, a feature which continues to this day.

Criticism

The objectivity of Global is sometimes seen as limited due to its inherent Kelssekian perspective, being written and produced in that country. While the magazine makes a conscious attempt to avoid national bias and the use of loaded or judgemental terms in its articles, nonetheless an editorial bias towards liberal-democratic beliefs is usually evident. Global also often actively engages in advocacy for the cause of fighting global poverty. Its emphasis on investigative journalism also means that it tends to be inherently critical of "the establishment", whether corporate or political.
