Overview

The Federation of Glorious Humanity is an emerging intersteller power. As the name implies, the nation is entirely human, with no nonhuman or alien species residing within its borders (officially, anyway). Boasting an impressive military, a powerful economy, and a loyal population committed to the ideals of the nation's founder, Jonas Mason, the only thing holding back Glorious Humanity right now is it's lack of technological parity with the older interstellar nations. It is currently led by President Mark Albert, who has led the country for close to twenty years. However, with his declaration that he will not run in the next election, the door is open for someone new to step in and take this land towards it's destiny.

Glorious Humanity is at a pivotal point in its history. With the beginnings of expansion into space, and the emerging psionic phenomenon, the nation must very soon decide where it will take the dreams of it's founder, and where those dreams truly lead.

Geography

Glorious Humanity on Earth occupies the southern part of the continent of Nusquam Esse, which it shares with the Drakonian Imperium and Tersanctus. The eastern coast is an inhospitable line of cliffs with only a few open beaches offering any chance at all of making landfall by sea. The west coast is much more welcoming. The Carth Mountains run north to south through the midwestern part of the country, and continue on into Drakonia, where they become part of another chain. The country is dotted with lakes and rivers, most notably Lake Chixi near the east coast, and the massive river that feeds it, also called the Chixi, though many sources, even some maps, call it by its popular name - the Red River.

Climate

The vast majority of the country is tropical, although colder climates exist in the Carth Mountains in the western part of the country, and around the northern border with Drakonia. At one time, the entire area was covered in rainforest, and vast tracts of tropical rainforest still remain, protected today by environmental legislature. The major cities of Glorious Humanity have been hacked out of the forest, and as they have expanded they have butted ever closer to what forest remains. It is not uncommon to see forests beginning scant hundreds of yards from the outskirts of many smaller cities, and though the largest population centers maintain large cleared areas, the rainforest is always trying to come back.

People

The population is an interesting mix of natives and newcomers. Though today the population is predominantly Caucasian, large groups of native peoples remain, some still living in traditional settlements, though the vast majority have moved to the major cities and joined mainstream society. Every minority one can think of is represented somewhere in the country. The capital at Dulles is as cosmopolitan and modern a city as one can imagine, at least as far as humans go. Nonhumans are still a rare sight anywhere in the country, though scant years ago they were an unheard of one, so one could consider this a slow, but steady improvement... or degradation, depending on one's point of view. Glorious Humans have very strong points of view, and will argue them with relish. The people love to debate the precise strengths or weaknesses of any particular argument. Free speech is exercised regularly, and any topic is fair game save for some points of the teachings of Jonas Mason, which are widely held as gospel by the nation at large.

Government

Glorious Humanity is a curious mix of monarchy and democracy. The President is elected every ten years, and while in office wields power similiar to that of a king (or queen, twenty-two past Presidents have been women). All offices below the President are filled by appointees, until one reaches the provincial level. Glorious Humanity is divided into fifteen provinces, and the provincial governor of each is elected, and then, as at the federal level, the governor appoints offices below them. This goes down to the county, and then to the local level, with the top office in each level being elected, and all others below them appointed. In addition, the judicial system, from local judges up to the Supreme Court, is elected. In theory, this prevents a President from rewriting the law of the country to suit themselves, as the judges are not political appointees, and thus their jobs do not hang on pleasing their patron.

The President is assisted in decision making by the President's Council, a group of high ranking officials, usually Ministers of various departments of the government, as well as the heads of the armed forces, who advise the President. The membership has fluctuated many times, but at present the Council is made up of Frank Pierce, Minister of International Relations, Paul Brooks, Minister of Internal Security, and the Supreme Commanders of each branch of the military, who are in no particular order: Herbert Ablegard, Army, Allean Hanoway, Nautical Navy, Florence Washington, Air Force, Harold Fox, Military Intelligence, and newly appointed Davis Matheson, Star Navy. The Ministers of Agriculture and Health also nominally hold seats, though they attend meetings only rarely, and hardly ever use their power.

The ultimate rule of law is the Teachings of Peaceful Society, a series of tomes penned by the nation's founder, Jonas Mason, which purport to outline the proper way to create a peaceful and prosperous society no matter what the challenges. As noted before, the Glorious Humans regard these books as gospel, and they are in essence the constitution of the country. Political education in their teachings is part of every school's curriculum.

Law Enforcement

Despite being free in many ways, Glorious Humanity is arguably one of the most heavily policed nations in the world, with law enforcement in everything and everywhere. At least up until recently, criminals could commit their crimes expecting to be caught, and trials were usually swift, and punishments could be severe. Though Glorious Humanity does not use the death penalty, many other capital punishments, such as chain gangs and enforced servitude bordering on slavery, are used along with extensive rehabilitation programs to show criminals the error of their ways. The appearance of psionics, and criminals with those powers, has confounded law enforcement, though the problem is slowly coming under control. Soon, police control will be as tight as ever.

Military

Glorious Humanity has a powerful military force for a basically peaceful nation. Anywhere from five to ten percent of the nation's population is either serving or are veterans of service in a branch of the armed forces, and the creation of the Space Fleet further exploded this number, as an entirely new branch needed an entirely new infrastructure of people. The military serves as a secondary support police force in times of need, and also enforces Glorious Humanity's policies in territories abroad. Notable at the moment is the substantial Glorious Human deployment to the turbulent nation of Fyrehart, where Glorious Human and local soldiers maintain martial law of all the land east of the River of Fyre.

Conclusion

It is an eventful time to be a Glorious Human. With so many new changes and developments, only time will tell what the ultimate fate of this nation will be, and whether or not the social experiment of Jonas Mason will bear the fruit he wished. Glorious Humanity has only recently begun aggressively developing its position in the world, after centuries of isolation. How much will the nation be changed by the universe it meets? No one knows.
