The Grand Street Massacre, one of the earliest events of what is now known as the Gull Flag Revolution, took place on 5 December 1951 in Ianapalis. A union at Royal Mining and Manufacturing's Grand Street Steelworks, formed in secret to avoid corporate reprisals, took its workers onto strike to protest a recent paycut. RM&M, furious both that a union had been formed under its nose and unwilling to set precedents, refused to compromise and threatened to hire strike breakers. The government, wary of a violent confrontation between corporate and union forces, sent the IV RIfles to moniter the strike and ensure that it remained peaceful.

However, a RM&M agitator hidden in the sit-down strike fired on the government troops, who responded with three devastating fullisades. The strike was broken, the Grand Street Steelworkers Brotherhood was dismembered, and Lawrence Madders was exiled to Roania.
