The Great Civil Conflict was the largest and most famous civil war in the history of Allech-Atreus. The product of dissatisfaction with Imperial policy, the conflict started when thev regional government of the Republic of Vardacia took control of Fleet ships and Imperial installations in their space in a bid to get the Emperor to end many unsavory policies that hurt the Republic.

Start of Conflict

The Emperor appeared ready to concede to the Vardacians, but was advised by his Privy Councillors against the move. He refused to pull back the decrees, and ordered the Republic to return all Imperial property.

The Republic appeared ready to give in, when radical elements in the government seized control. The Vardacian Communist Party, a radical group that called for the destruction of the Imperial system, seized command of the Republic and attacked the Sultanate of Osmana, taking it byt surprise.

Declaring itself the Republic of the Vardacian Commonwealth, the rebels attacked Imperial outposts and captured whatever they could find, whipping the populace into a rebellious frenzy. The Emperor immediatly convened a Grand Fleet and declared Vardacia to be in rebellion. The loyalist regions immediatly called up their militias should the Empire require them, and major conflict began.

Rebels Increase

The Vardacian rebels struck quickly, seizing control of Osmana and Danaae quickly, bolstering their forces. They made inroads into Atraxia, and actually managed to seize Artaxia and Longyear intact, cutting off Zurrian trade from the Empire and into their own pockets.

Imperial forces were on the run, before holding their ground. The Kolthurnian commanders defended against attacks, and Fleet admirals prevented further inroads into Atraxia. Loyalist forces held the line, buffetted by rebel attacks and raids, and appeared ready to break.

Turnaround

The high-water mark came for the rebels, who had exhausted their advantage by attacking wildly across all fronts. The Imperial High Commander, Pelegit Kurimza Mat, took the opportunity and struck into Osmana, liberating the Sultan and his family and seizing Kazman Prime. Kolthurnian forces attacked in Artaxia, breaking the rebel hold on trade routes and gaining the advantage.

The rebels were slowly beaten back under Mat's command, until they had lost all but Vardacia itself. Daxia, which had rebelled initially, surrendered willingly to avoid the coming seige. Mat seiged Vardacia for a full standard year, seizing planets one by one. FInally, he seized Vordax and captured the entire command, which had refused to surrender at the last minute. The rebellion had been broken.

Aftermath

Heavy retribution was placed on Vardacia, and thouands of prisoners were executed for rebellion and treason, including the leaders of the rebels, killed in a very public display.

However, the Emperor granted amnesty to a great number of those involved, and as a gesture of healing, repealed his previous policies.

The conflict had nearly destroyed the Empire, but resulted in a stronger union.
