Not much is known about the cause of the great nuclear conflict that came to be known as, depending on the region, Great War (Leninist Dynasty territories), World War III (Japan) or World War Zero (United Continents Of America). Solely the World IV setting gives an explanation for its individual course of the war, but this has been subject to intense retconning in the past.

However, in all settings, it is known that the War was a conflict between a central-european superpower called the Empire and it's allies in South America, Central Africa, Japan and Arabia versus an alliance of nuclear superpowers USA and the Russian Federation. While the Empire's allies easily advanced and rushed through their neighbouring countries, in Europe the Empire was at first battled to a stalemate in the west by France and Great Britain. Yet, the Empire managed to conquer Denmark, the Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland, and much of eastern Europe, before stopping infront of the Russian border, turning it's powers south and finally meeting with allied turkish forces in Greece. Meanwhile, Turkey had also conquered the arabian peninsula nd parts of north Africa. Yet, they were unable to advance through the Saharah desert to meet with kongolesian forces, who conquered much of Africa for the Empire. In South America, Argentinia rushed towards the United States, conquering many south and central american states in the process. In Europe, the Empire finally managed to conquer France, and it was shared between the German and Italian occupation forces. Most of Northern Europe also fell into the Empire's hands. The iberian peninsula was also absorbed by the Empire, leaving the British Isles as the only remaining free lands of Europe. The Turkish forces meanwhile managed to rush as far as the borders of India and preparing to meet with Imperial Japanese forces moving through south-east asia and batteling China while German forces entered Russia and came as far as the outskirts of Moscow before being beaten at the site today known as First Visitation by communist forces, which had taken control over the country after the first victories of the Germans. Meanwhile, they had also banned with turkish forces on the balcan. Further plans included the rush of imperial German forces through greenland to attack North America from the North in support of the planned Argentinian invasion from the south. However, resistance was already forming massively, and the said expansion was the furthest the Imperial forces got. The United States successfuly launched a preemptive strike against the Argentinian forces, pushing them back to their old territory, and finally occupying South America completely. Russian forces drove out Turkish forces from central Asia and removed Imperial German forces from their western territories after batteling the Japanese in China. China was occupied in the process and became a major contribution to what later became to be known as the Leninist Dynasty. The United States and Russia had both been attacked by Japanese forces before, and so the US launched an attack against Japan together with Russian forces, and this combined attack would later make Japan the only multi-national territory. There were only five western countries to resist the Empire in these days: USA, UK, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. The UK did not dare to attack the Imperial forces on the continent and - successfuly - concentrated on defending itself. After the fall of Turkey, Islamic rebells took over much of the area previously occupied by Turkey. To destroy the Empire's heartland, the Russians and Americans finally used nuclear missiles and completely destroyed central Europe. Russian ground forces, as being the only ones close enough to the Empire, finally moved in and occupied the Imperial original territories and contintal Europe. The Empire was finally beaten, only the Central African ally, the African Empire, was not destroyed, but was considered to be neglectable, deadlocked by the Arabic Islamic Union to the north. However, the US had occupied south america, where, traditionally, support for left-wing policies was very high, and vice versa, the Russians had occupied Europe. The US, which renamed itself to United Continents Of America, and the now pan-eurasian Russia, which renamed itself Leninist Dynasty, were just entering a second cold war. However, the nuclear radiation left over by the massive use of nukes was a much bigger issue, finally leading to a new age known as the Bunker Era, and even after that, the only armed conflict, despite much hateful propagana on both sides, remained the UCA raid on the Eastern Capital (Moscow) following the Incident.

India

In year 15 of the war, a small military expedition from the Osman Empire entered the country over Pakistan. The force captured Ludhiana, and although indian forces secured Delhi and drove the invaders back, no successful counterstrike could be made against Pakistan, since the majority of indian military forces was stuck in the countries hinterland, several hundred miles east of Delhi and the military garrison of Delhi and other forces that had been located to the city, though of significant military power, did not dare to attack without backup. A small force of indian partisans attempted to cross the India-Pakistan border on the Himalaya, but was completely destroyed. It was not before an unknown adventurer in pay of the indian government crossed the border on his own an successfuly guided an indian nuclear missile into the city of Lahore that the muslim army was finally forced to retreat. Later, India took part in the nuclear strikes against the Empire, and suffered from massive V- and airstrikes, but the large country was able to absorb the damage without much trouble.
