The Gulf of Vasconia refers both to the great gulf bordered and nearly landlocked on all sides by Nabarro Abarca and to the saltwater sea situated between Vasconia and Ambara bounded on the east by a number of island chains. and historically considered a continuation of the gulf. The Gulf of Vasconia is bounded on the north and west by Nabarro Abarca and the gulf proper is also bounded by Nabarro Abarca on the south. In its broader sense, the gulf is bounded on the south by Abt and to the east by a number of island chains including the Gulf Islands, the Imperial Islands and the Hipolitan Archipelago. The entire area, including the Gulf Islands, Hipolis, New Deasrargle, Abt, the Lanerian Gulf Coast, the Imperial Islands and the Nabarran Gulf Coast are referred to as the Gulf Area.

The Gulf's deepest point is the Great Trough between Hipolis and New Deasrargle. The trough is 7,115 feet below sea level. The coastline of the Gulf has many smaller gulfs and bays, including a number of natural harbors.

History

The islands in the Gulf were settled by a variety of European powers. Although Kaitan-Leagran remained under the control of Finara until well into the 20th century and Hipolis was thoroughly independent from the beginning, most of the islands came to be part of Nabarro Abarca. Some remained unclaimed.

In the late eighteenth century, nationalist rebellions occurred on a number of islands. Laneria acted swiftly to support the rebels, leading to a small war between Nabarro Abarca and Laneria. At the end of the war, Laneria found itself in possession of a number of self-governing or semi-self-governing unincorporated territories which it saw as a strategic asset for future conflicts with the Nabarrans.
