The Hanover Island Chain is a small collection of islands that stretch south eastwards over twenty nautical miles providing the locals a lot of room to sail around with the flag of the King of Stevid flying in the sea breeze. The island chain has been named the North Hanover Island Chain and has only recently been annexed into the Holy Empire. The island was not previously inhabited by anything but wildlife (if not that then the Empire has not been informed by any other nation that has said it has claims on the island. It is one of many islands and island chains in the Empire but it is also one of the more distant ones from conventional military protection. It is for this reason that one or two of the islands in the Hanover Chain house one or more maximum-security prisons for holding the worst case of prisoners such terrorists and those of illegal religions in Stevid.

Colonisation

First discovered to be free of international claims and uninhabited by humans by a trawler crew from Stevid that were venturing a long distance from the regular fishing sectors. When bad seas swirled and the wind picked up to dangerous levels, the trawler made for the cover of a natural harbour on the eastern mainland of the two largest islands to escape. When they returned to Sunderland Harbour they informed the coast guard of the newly discover islands and also reported then to the Geographical Office, Met Office and Foreign Office of the discovery and the prospect of colonisation was quickly brought before Parliament. After a few weeks of debating and numerous arguments for and against the colonisation ideas the proposal went through. The islands (named after the trawler captain, Captain Hanover) were then deemed to be the property of the Stevidian state and Empire. A naval expeditionary force was dispatched in the year 2001 to colonise all the islands in the chain and gain control and hold up indefinitely. The first buildings were initially military firebases and make shift ports and airports. However less than a month later builders and huge freight and fuel tankers were on and around the island building and supplying the newly arriving civilian population. In full, total colonisation of the islands was completed in one year and two months in which time allowed the government to tell the world it was their chain of islands. Such was the insignificance of the chain as far as natural resources are concerned. No nation appealed, either that or they hadn’t realised it was under the flag of the Stevidians and under authority of the crown itself.

Geography and Location on the Globe

The chain of islands is located in a relatively unknown area of the globe to Stevid. It was known to the foreign office but it was of such little importance to Stevid and her interests that the nations located there were merely recorded and then filed for recognition and nothing else. The nearest nation to the island chain is the nation of Kanami that was seen as just another nation though coincidently the two nations would become hostile in the future. It is situated in the same sea as Kanami is just under five hundred nautical miles due southeast of the Kanami mainland. During the Stevid Cold War (Also See: The Hanover Conflict) the islands largest islands and there ports were used by the fleet as a staging point and so the islands now have a strategic value to the nation and to the Royal Navy, RAF and the army- although the island is still not heavily defended in the slightest.

The islands show a lot of terrain resemblance to the Falkland Islands and the Falkland Dependency. It is a generally cold climate and very windy on most days and also is prone to the usual forecasts of rain. The rolling white hills are littered with odd patches of grass and what fertile soil there is will almost certainly be used for farmland. The farming agriculture is not very diverse but includes pig farms, chicken farms and flocks of sheep.
