Her Imperial Majesty Empress Helena Angela was distantly related to the Angeli Emperors of Constantinople who had ruled the Empire until the Fourth Crusade conquered the city in 1204. "Good Empress Ellie", as she was affectionately known by the people of New Rome, was the consort of Demetrius II Palaeologus, to whom she was married in a double coronation-wedding ceremony when she was only twelve and he eleven. The couple had only one surviving son, the future Demetrius III Palaeologus, although Helena endured several traumatic miscarriages.
