The First Republic (1824-1830)

The Revolution (1824-1826)

In 1824, dissastified with the distant, corrupt and inefficient government in Mexico City, the settlers in the northern areas declared their independence. The area found themselves in need of a general to defeat the armies of Guadalupe Victoria. They found a great one in John Young. Young had recently immigrated to Mexico from Louisiana, where he had moved from Kentucky. Young marshaled a relatively large army in California and marched it down to the southern border of the new nation. Sam Houston did the same east in Texas. The Mexican army foolishly marched between the two armies, and in the massive Battle of El Paso in March, 1825 was crushed resoundingly. The rest of the war wasn't much, and independence was achieved in 1826.

The Early Years (1826-1829)

A very loose confederation was formed in 1826, one which gave almost no authority to the central government.
