Hydranj
Nation: Thingamajiggers
Function: Capital
Population: 8.5 million
Leader: Anura Scintal

The city of Hydranj is the capital city of Thingamajiggers. Located on the dividing line of the provinces of Heiow, Edan, and Oosay, its central land mass is an island located at the split of a river into two other. The river, Aelson, divides into the the Greater Gis River and the Green Falls Waterway. The central island is named Iskatensal, and holds all of the national offices of the capital, as the island is officially part of no province. The city has grown so large that it now expands to the banks on the other sides of the rivers, and these regions are officially on the lands of the other provinces. However, to avoid the chaos of a city ruled by four different sets of laws, they are not under the legal jurisdiction of these provinces, and are ruled by the city government located on Iskatensal.

History

Before the Thingans

Before the Thornichi settled in Thorin, the land was home to a native people, the Lugonomeks. Within this civilization were various tribes, each ruled by their "til Arkto", or "the chief". In the territory that makes up modern Thingamajiggers, there were three tribes: the Unleimeks, the Yunomeks, and the Galethomeks. These three tribes called the island "Insil Rifusven", or "Island at the River Split".

The three tribes considered the island common ground. The reason for this was that all rivers within Thorin eventually connected to one of the three rivers through others, making the island an ideal place for any tribe to reach. The island was a center of trade, as well as a diplomatic meeting place to settle tribal conflicts. The island eventually became a prosperous settlement, renowned for its standard of living and amazing architecture for the era.

Change of Power

Around 1870 BF, disagreements among the tribes of the Thornichi led to them breaking away from each other and moving to opposite sides of the Thornichi Mountain Range. The Thornichi, who had previously co-existed peacefully with the Lugonomeks as they lived in the mountains, began to capture Lugonomek land for themselves. The Lugonomeks and Thingans had similar religions in regards to the fact that they both believed in tribes being protected by a guardian god. Key leaders within the Thingan tribe, hungry for power, noticed that the gods of the Unleimeks, Yunomeks, and Galethomeks, Unlei, Galeth, and Yun, were similar in name to Unleh, Kalet, and Jun, the three gods who, in Thingan religion, killed Thok, their guardian god. Despite the fact that the gods were in no way similar to their supposed counterparts beyond their names, the leaders told their people that they were the same gods. They used this story as justification for capturing Lugonomekan land. As long as they only stole land from the Unleimeks, Yunomeks, and Galethomeks, their crusade was justified and natural.

It was this climate that led to the defeat of the Lugonomeks in battle at Insil Rifusven in 1829 BF. With this crucial defeat in place, the Lugonomeks' defeat was ensured in the area. The rest of the "Thingan Territory" was captured within eight years.

Founding and Early Years

After the capture, the island was renamed to Iskatensal by the Thingans. The name roughly translates to "Island of Iskaten", after the demigod Iskaten, son of Thok, who slayed Jun, Kalet, and Unleh, became a god by drinking their blood, and became the new guardian god of the Thingans. The settlement of Hydranj was settled upon the remains of the previous settlement.

For similar reasons as it had with the Lugonomeks, the settlement quickly became an important part of the Thingan society. It was the central trading post, and was soon the most populous city. Its central location in the territory, as well as its neutral ground in between borders, helped to make it a center of diplomacy for the various Thingan tribes, which governed themselves in their own territories.

Creation of Outer Cities

Eventually, settlements were established on the other sides of the rivers, naturally forming due to the importance of the island. The city of Krannels was officially established as a city in Edan in 1005 BF. Shortly afterward, Heiow followed suite on its side by officially declaring its settlements bordering the island a city, establishing the city of Merennalt in 1001 BF. However, Oosay did not officially create the city of Tyalli'ar until 10 BF.

These cities would remain separate entities for centuries.

At Time of Founding of Thingamajigs

When Thingamajigs was established in 5 AF, Hydranj was the second most populous city in the country, with a population of 2.4 million. It was second only to Kirq, the oldest major settlement in Thorin. However, the capital was placed in Thokran, a city protected by the Misca Mountains that was where the constitution of Thingamajigs was written. The city of Hydranj kept growing in importance during this period, however.

Center of the Revolution

As the country of Thingamajigs slowly grew more authoritarian and corrupt, the city of Hydranj became a center of radical thought. It was in this city that Neovitar Karnbeln, a philosopher, began to become famous among the counterculture for his ideas, which said that the right to rule was not inherently in the hands of a chosen few; rather, the governed gave the people consent to govern in exchange for protection, order, and organizing for common benefits. The government was the servant of the people, who had the right to revoke its authorization to rule if the governments failed to serve them.

It was thus that, when the Karnbeln brothers led the revolution from 260 to 275, Hydranj was the revolution's spiritual center. When the Dominion of Thingamajiggers came into existence in 278, the center of the government was moved to Hydranj.

Formation of Metropolis

Due to the construction of bridges and increasingly densely populated land, the 4 cities on and around the island of Iskatensal eventually became virtually one city, merely separated by physical boundaries. This led to the Hydranj Metropolitan Ordinance in 480 AF. This established the 4 cities as simply being separate districts within an overall city called Hydranj. The ordinance also placed the 3 outer districts under the control of the government of Iskaten, taking the 3 former cities out of the hands of the provinces to avoid the chaos of a city ruled by 4 different sets of laws.

The Day of Terror and the Kruschuchkian Invasion

In 773, Makh Allet's government collapsed due to its autocratic ruling style, lack of regard for the population, and the death of Jingh Kanath. The government was unable to survive his death. Most citizens, finally fed up with the Jingh, were not sad to see the dictatorship end, despite their nationalistic tendencies. Some, however, were less than happy the events. Most of these people were either blindly patriotic or had benefitted from the reign of Kanath due to their positions in his government.

These people blamed Thingamajiggers for the collapse of their government. They claimed that, being their age-old enemy, the nation had infiltrated their government, weakening it and assassinating the Jingh with poisons. The people formed a terrorist group, Alleti Gol (Du-Hickazn for Mountain Sun). On April 2, 774, Alleti Gol attacked the city of Hydranj. With amazing timing, they simulataneously set off bombs within the Assembly Chamber, the Executive Chambers, the Hall of Justice, and the city's central plaza, killing half of the Dominion Assembly, the Karnbeln and his deputy, and all but one Central Court Justice, as well as 19 civilians and 36 government employees. The government was in chaos. Noone knew who was in charge or if more attacks would occur.

Two days after the Day of Terror, Kruschuchk's Red Army attacked the confused and weakened government of Thingamajiggers. They easily occupied the country, which was unable to pull together its army. Kruschuchk occupied the country for 7 months before the (now in hiding) government finally was able to strike back against the invaders. Fortunately, this happened as Kruschuchk was attacked from the other side simultaneously by Thingamajiggers's unexpected allies, Xerkunia. The capital city was liberated on November 10, 774.
