Basic Information

Hydrarchia, with humble beginnings as a loose coalition of seven “Pirate Utopias” (though some date origins as far back as the enigmatic "Sea Peoples"), and now consisting of scattered archipelagos, numerous atolls, various hidden tropical coves, flotillas of lashed together junks, squatted derelict offshore oil refineries and drilling stations, fleets of clean cold-fusion submarines and requisitioned overcrowded aircraft carriers, solar-powered ocean liners, plethora of sloops, yachts, and other sailing vessels, et cetera, has always provided a safe haven for mutinous naval and merchant mariners throughout the world. In addition to providing a home for the roving revolutionary aquatic proletariat from all corners of the globe, Hydrarchia engages in the water-borne transportation of goods, the occasional expropriation and redistribution of wealth of its more capitalistic and authoritarian neighbors, the smuggling of subversive literature produced by its book publishing industries into same, its aquaculure and fishing programs as well as the disruption of those who have a less-than ecologically sane relationship for sustainable harvest of the fruits of the sea. While it may have not been able to completely stamp out exchange value within its own “borders”, with many of its young men still trading their hydroponically grown lemons for profit (admittedly a unexpected boon to our own public health efforts against scurvy), it can be seen valiant efforts at ensuring that ‘from each according to their ability to each according to their needs’ is more than empty phraseology employed propagandistically.

The Carnivalesque Thalassocracy of Hydrarchia is a huge, socially progressive nation, renowned for its strong anti-capitalist politics, complete lack of prisons or drug laws, "compulsory" vegetarianism, and scenic sandy beaches. Its compassionate, hard-working, intelligent population hold their civil and political rights very dear, although the wealthy and those in business tend to be viewed with suspicion. It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, council communist government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Education, Social Welfare, and the Environment. The average income tax rate is 100%. The private sector is almost wholly made up of enterprising fourteen-year-old boys selling lemonade on the sidewalk, although the government is looking at stamping this out. Hydrarchia's national animal is the Many Headed Hydra, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the Dubloon.

Military

The peoples milita of Hydrachia, known as the Corsairs, are reknowned for their expertise in amphibious assault and naval manuevers. At a young age Hydrarchias citizens learn a close quarters martial arts style called SilatSavate which incorprates deadly kicking and knife-fighting techiniques. Its fluid movements are applicable both above and below water. Advanced training is given in firearms, diving, combat swimming, marine engineering, and demolitions. Many of the ships, submersibles, aircraft, and weapons in use by the Corsairs come from captured prizes, salvage, or are attained by mutinous defection to Hydrachia from other nations. The worker-owned and operated syndicate, Combat Operational Ballistics and Revolutionary Armaments (or COBRA for short) produces the native military hardware in use. Due to their efforts Jatimatic, Franchi SPAS-15, and Springfield XD clones are ubiquitous. They have made signifigant improvements in bio-diesel outboard motors, hydrofoil, hovercraft, and propeller propulsion advancements, as well as magnetohydrodynamic drives for use in short range high speed sleds. The naval vessels produced by COBRA emphasize speed and/ or stealth. The following lists some of the better known:

Moray Hydrofoil, Killer Whale, Water Moccasin, Devilfish, Hydrosled, and Nightlanding

The Carnivaleque Thalassocracy of Hydrarchia's Underground Liberatory Help Union (CTHULHU) is the covert mutual aid network and intelligence agency which aims to gather information and engage in intervetions of use to Hydrarchia and the international working classes. Agents have been known to operate all over the globe assisting in various struggles, infiltration amongst several nations dockworkers is purportedly quite high. Its headquarters is rumored to be in R'lyeh a small aqualogy (or "sunken city") somewhere in the southeast Pacific Ocean. The doorway arch of the HQ at R'lyeh reads "Abandon all despair ye who enter here, dread CTHULHU waits dreaming, yet we shall rise and the Commune shall cover the Earth."

Religion

The majority of Hydrachia's residents are simply atheist. Tiny immigrant populations of Buddhists, Jews, Orthodox, Catholic and Protestant Christians, Muslims, rumored Ton Ton Macoute and other religions exist.

The unique beleif system already extant in Hydrarchia "Gnostic Islam" or the Wise Craft of Submission to the Will of Logos dominates Hydrachian spirituality and permeates many aspects of culture, philosophy, and art. Colloquially known also as "Gabrielism" or, as a shorthand, the "Wise Craft of Logos" its founding can be traced to the "Antinomian Synod" of Libertalia where Thomas Tew, Captain Misson and a "lewd" Dominican priest named Caraccioli invited an assortment of heretics, mystics, animists, occultists and apostates to congregate.
