The Democratic Republic of Ibakania is a small, safe nation, remarkable for its compulsory military service. Its compassionate population of 18 million are prohibited from doing almost everything except voting, which they do timidly and conservatively.

General Information

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, socially-minded government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Social Welfare, Education, and Healthcare. The average income tax rate is 43%, but much higher for the wealthy. A tiny private sector is dominated by the Furniture Restoration industry.

Organ donation is compulsory, meat-eating is frowned upon, the government is avowedly atheist, and voting is compulsory. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown, despite the fact that it is difficult to make it through a day without breaking one of the country's many laws. Ibakania's national animal is the cockatiel, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the ivnakor.

History

Ibakania is a country with a long illustrious history, dating back to the 17th century.

The beginnings of Ibakania can be sourced back to a revolt in 1678 by the Ivnakors (For which the Ibakani currency's name 'Ivnakor' can be sourced), the slaves of King Piziwiq of Pandorian. The Ivnakors were a minority who had been discriminated against and enslaved for thousands of years.

The leader of the Ivnakori revolt was a man called Iba Kani. The Ivnakors had taken the south west of Pandorian, however, King Piziwiq had raised one of the largest armies Pandorian had ever known. The Ivnakors were doomed, for they did not possess much in the way of a fighting force. After begging for a ceasefire with King Piziwiq, which was rejected, King Piziwiq ordered that all Ivnakors were to be slaughtered. At this, the Ivnakors began to build a fort, which housed all 200,000 Ivnakors in the nation of Pandorian. However, when the Pandorian force reached the Fort, known as Tyronnian (hence the name of the old currency of Ibakania), it soon became clear that the Ivnakori forces did not stand a chance. Kani was considering mass suicide, rather than be killed by the Pandorians.

However, at that moment, a mass emigration of cockatiels flew overhead, hitting the Pandorian forces, who were distracted. The Ivnakori people decided to follow the cockatiels, who were flying away and out of Pandorian. However, the Ivnakori forces stayed, commanded by Iba Kani. With the supreme command skills of Iba Kani, who capitalised on the distraction, the Ivnakors surprisingly defeated the Pandorian forces, and took more than a quarter of Pandorian's best soldiers. At this the Ivnakori forces advanced on the Pandorian capital, Slingozi, unchecked, as almost all Pandorian forces were either dead or captured. Iba Kani captured King Piziwiq once at Slingozi, and forced him to sign a peace treaty and sign over the southern half of Pandorian to Ivnakori control.

Iba Kani went to the new Ivnakori capital, Tyronnian (named for the fort), a hero. He had liberated the Ivnakors, and became the new Ivnakori leader, declaring the new national motto to be "Rector per sanctus cockatiel , sors ventus Ivnakors.", Latin for "Guided by the sacred cockatiel, fortune favours the Ivnakors.", and declared the cockatiel Ivnakors' national animal, giving them the right of access to all areas in Ivnakors. Iba Kani returned a 1/10 of the forces to Pandorian, converting the rest to Ivnakors. Kani's rule lasted until 1696, when he was assassinated by a Pandorian ninja. In retaliation, the Ivnakors captured the remainder of Pandorian, claiming it as their own. After early resistance, the Pandorians settled after various rules were implemented to make sure Pandorians and Ivnakors were to be considered equal. In 1697, the Ivnakors decided to rename the country 'Ibakania', and change the country's motto to "Rector per sanctus cockatiel , sors ventus Ibakania.". The new Ibakanians instituted a liberal, Janus Selestrius, as their leader. Janus helped to modernise Ibakania in many ways, and his rule lasted until 1732, when he decided to transform Ibakania into a complete democracy, and resigned as leader of Ibakania.

In 1847, the leader of Ibakania, Sebastian Helgas, decided after months of protests to return the north eastern part of Ibakania, which included Slingozi, to the Pandorians.

By 1928, tensions were rising between Ibakania and various neighbours. Aided by their allies, the Pandorians, Ibakania declared war on Ylyngyros, Lastradoria, and Vaggrydsya, after the massacre of a clutch of cockatiels in the care of Ibakania, and recent tensions. In this bloody war, known as the Cockatiel War, over 3 million soldiers died. The war ended in 1937 with the launch of a nuclear missile at Ylyngyros' capital, Seleniria.

After the war, unemployment and corruption were at an all time high. In 1941, the Ibakanians elected a new Premier, Denrir Aslain. Denrir is credited mostly with turning Ibakania into a modern, clean democracy, by putting a 4 pint restriction on all alcohol, and using prisoners to help rebuild Ibakania after the devastating Cockatiel War. By 1954, Ibakania was one of the most modernised countries in the world. In 1967, Denrir Aslain was re-elected to an unprecedented 6th term in office, and used this to his advantage. As Denrir was seen in an almost cult-like way by his people, he chose to push some new, controversial laws related to equality. In doing so, he gave all people over 18 the vote, and gave equal rights to all people. However, this dented Denrir's approval rating significantly, and in 1972, after 31 years in office, Denrir declared he would not run for Premier in that year's election. That year, the Ibakanians elected the leader of the Socialist Party, Semino Qalizi.

Qalizi was a controversial leader, introducing censorship of the arts and in broadcasting and journalism, and promoting many of his friends into office. He was not greeted well, and after 2 years, the Socialist Party received a vote of no confidence and Qalizi scheduled a snap election. The Socialists were voted out of power in the election, and voted in was Triaska Owangu, the first black Premier, and the first female Premier, a member of the Democratic Party.

In 1978, to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the revolt of the Ivnakors, Owangu changed the flag of Ibakania from the red-green-black tricolour to a cockatiel, and changed the currency name from tyronnian to ivnakor.

In 1982, after Owangu's re-election to her 3rd term in power, a bomb went off in Tyronnian, killing the majority of her cabinet. The bomb was apparantly planted by Pandorian agents, who wished for Pandorian to receive more land. Owangu realised that these people were a great danger to Ibakania, and moved Ibakania to the North Pacific, leaving the Pandorians to re-claim their land, which had not been in their ownership for 304 years.

In 1993, Owangu announced she would not continue as Premier in that summer's elections, after 19 years in power - so far the closest any leader has come to rivalling Denrir Aslain's 31 years in power. Taking her place was Prime Minister Jominic Hastos.

1996 saw remembrance for the 300th anniversary of Iba Kani's assassination, and in 1997 mass celebrations were held to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the birth of the nation of Ibakania.

Hastos led until 1998, when he resigned after being impeached due to perjury, when he sued the Daily Ibakanian for publishing an article about his affair with call girl Sandi Winters. He was replaced by Democratic Socialist leader, Tyron Wilson, who has led until this day.

In 2006, following an invitation from GOD BLESS AMERICA, Ibakania was moved to the continent of Government, where it has resided ever since.

Upon the move to Government, Ibakania claimed 3 islands - Islands 45, 62 and 72.

However, Islands 45 and 62 had already been claimed by Ranger82, the country neighbouring Ibakania. Tensions rose until eventually war was declared. Island 72 was conceded to actavision in recognition of his refusal to fight his brother. In a 14 minute war, troops were sent to Islands 45 and 62, and skirmishes occured between Ibakanian forces and Rangeri forces. It got to the point which Ibakania sent troops into Ranger82 territory and began to advance upon the capital, at which point they were stopped, in order to conduct diplomacy. Finally, actavision gave up Island 72 and took Island 59 instead, giving 72 to Ranger82, ending the problem. Island 62 went to Ibakanian control and Island 45 was originally going to remain independent, but Ibakania decided to give this land to Ranger82.
