The Federation of Iberic States

Overview

The Federation of Iberic States is a small country located in Europa. Geographically, the country is mainly on the Iberian Peninsula, but also has the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Madeira, Azores and Canary Islands in the Atlantic, and the city-states of Ceuta and Melilla, in northern Africa. Castilian and Portuguese are the official languages in all the Federation, although some states have their own official languages (besides Castilian and Portuguese).

History

The Federation of Iberic States was founded in 1973, after the opressed people of Spain & Portugal decided they had had enough dictatorship. Terrorist actions, combined with two coups organized by the groups of the oppositions, which had joined their forces in the Iberic Antifascist Movement, led to an overthrow of the dictatorships in both countries. The revolutionary assemblies, supported by the vast majority of the citzens, organized and held elections, legalizing all political parties, which had been banned in both countries for decades. A Federal Constitution was written (and aproved in March, 1974), and the divisions of states were agreed, matching the regions aproximately. The flag was designed by a team of specialists, and it consists on a combination of the tricolour from the Spanish Republic's flag and the green from Portugal's flag, with 21 white stars representing the 21 states. Also, green and red are the traditional colors of Iberic Federalism, red and yellow are the traditional colours of the ancient kingdom of Aragón (which covered Aragón, Catalunya, País Valencià, Illes Balears and other territories in the Mediterranean Sea and Italy), and purple is the colour of Castile (Castilla).

Language

Castilian and Portuguese are official languages all over the Federation, the Constitution says all citzens have the commitment to know them and the right to use them at their choice. Some states have other official languages, that are recognized in the Constitution, and are used officially in those states, in conjunction with Castilian and Portuguese. The states with other official languages are:

  • Galiza: Galician (Galego)
  • Asturias: Bable (Asturianu, Bable)
  • Euskadi, Nafarroa: Basque (Euskara)
  • Catalunya, València, Illes Balears: Catalan (Català, Valencià)

The laws on transportation specify that the names of cities, regions, etc in roads, maps and streets must be shown only in their original language, mainly for saving space in placards, specially in states with 3 official languages. The original language of Açores, Madeira, Trás-os-Montes, Beira, Tejo and Algarve is Portuguese, while the original language of Castilla, León, Aragón, Extremadura, Andalucía, Islas Canarias, and the city-states of Ceuta and Melilla is Castilian. Obviously, the original languages of Galiza, Asturias, Euskadi, Nafarroa, Catalunya, València and Illes Balears are the ones stated in the list above.
