Independence City

Independence City, the capital of Knorfladshgeff, was founded in 1601. The city first started as a small port village, consisting of 3,000 people. Since then, the city has swelled to a population of 57 million persons. Independence City is the centre of arts, culture, science and education in Knorfladshgeff. The city houses all of the federal government buildings and also a myriad of foreign embassies. Independence City's metro area consists of 60 million people.

Geography

Independence City is located on a peninsula located north of the province of Elizabethan and south of Prime Minister's Island. The two bodies of water near the city are Newtown Strait and the Gulf of Knorfladshgeff. The city is relatively safe from hurricanes, but hurricanes can still occur near the city. The Great Hurricane of 1924 killed nearly 3 million people and caused about US$829,939,738 in damage.

Demographics

As of the census of 2006, there are 57,457,319 people, 25,592,948 households, and 13,394,932 families residing in the city. The population density is 35,812.4/km² . The racial makeup of the city is 70.0% White (European and Other) 10.0% Black or African, 15.0% Asian, 5.0% Other/Mixed Race.

There are 25,592,948 households out of which 20.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 30.7% are married couples living together, 10.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 50.9% are non-families. 35.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.10 and the average family size is 2.34.

The median income for a household in the city is US$57,889, and the median income for a family is US$70,341. Males have a median income of US$52,825 versus US$48,581 for females. The per capita income for the city is US$67,092. 9.5% of the population and 14.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 21.3% of those under the age of 18 and 4.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Districts

There are many districts located in Independence City. But there are five main districts (Districts recognised by the Knorfladshgeff Postal Service): Central Business District, Theatre District, Red District, Harbour District and Federal District.

Central Business District

The area of the city where there is the most movement and action. Over 50 international cooperations have offices in the Central Business District's many towering office buildings and skyscrapers. If the Central Business District were it's own nation, it would have a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of US$245.7 billion. The Central Business District is also home to 20 million people. The postal codes covering the District are Independence City 5, 6, 7 and 8.

Theatre District

The most eclectic part of the city, and is home to most of the city's entertainment venues and cultural venues. There are about 135 theatres in Independence City, and 120 of those are found in the Theatre District. The Theatre District is also home to about 100 restaurants and 70 museums. About 15 million people live in the Theatre District. The postal codes covering this district are Independence City 10, 11, 12 and 13.

Red District

This district gets it's name from the suicide that occured in the district. In Red Square, a square found in the district that prior to 1610 was known as Freedom Square, William Jameson, the man that ran for Prime Minister in 1610 and lost with a record 0% of the votes, hung himself. This district is home to former factories. The Red District is the bleakest part of the city, with about 75% of the residents in the district are at or below the poverty line. The Red District is also known for it's high crime rates, which the Independence Metro Police is trying to lower. The postal codes covering this district are Independence 4 and 14.

Harbour District

This is where Independence City's busy docks are located. Although this district is home to numerous docks and back alleys, it is actually one of the safest parts of the city from crime. In 2005, there were only 35 robberies, 20 home invasions, 5 rapes and 1 assault, the lowest in all of Independence City. The Harbour District is covered by the postal code Independence City 9.

Federal District

This is where the federal and city government rule from. This District is home to all of the nation's ministries, the executive office of the Prime Minister, the executive office of the Mayor of the City of Independence and home to the offices of all MP's (Members of Parliament). This district is also home to Independence Metro Police's central headquarters. The district also has all foreign embassies to Knorfladshgeff. But not only does politics take place here, but art also takes place here. Artists in this district are well known for their satirical art. The Federal District is covered by the postal codes Independence City 1, 2 and 3.
