This colony consistently has the best economy in FAN. Consistently vying with, but mostly beating out, New Caldari, Cramsfordd, Rafaelo, and Gevon for best economic sectors, Industrial Islands also has the highest GDP per capita in FAN. All industry on the island emits no pollution, thanks to extremely advanced technology. This, in comparison to the heavy pollution in Cramsfordd and high pollution in New Caldari, make the island a popular tourist spot as well.
Geography
It is located on the medium-sized island of Aket, which is known for its frigid temperatures and high volcanic activity and geological formations. Blizzards and heavy snowfall are commonplace, but storms are not as severe as Vladslepland because the island is surrounded by an ocean, which moderates the climate to a certain extent. The capital is Aketia, which is connected to many cities in Typophiles and Berkaterinsburg, Vladslepland via the TRTS service.
Government
Although the government is under the jurisdiction of Typophiles, the President of Industrial Islands has some control at the local level. The President is always the CEO of the corporation in Industrial Islands that made the most money the previous year. But the board of directors (CEC, or Chief Executive's Cabinet) is made up of the CEOs of the top nine largest corporations, including the largest to make a total of ten. The CEC informs the President to pass various pieces of legislation. However, any urgent and/or very important pieces of legislation must first be sent to Garamond for approval/disapproval before being sent back to the CEC. In this way, Typophiles Proper still exerts a fair amount of control.
History
Industrial Islands was settled in 1897 when explorers from Typophiles found the island of Aket. When it was first discovered, the island was uninhabited. A small settlement, now Aketia, was formed around the famous hot-water springs. Hotels and sanitariums sprang up, and industry moved in to cater to the needs of the many tourists, which flocked to Aket from around the region to take advantage of the pristine environment. Although tourism still plays an important role, it is now second to industry. Today, Industrial Islands is FAN's largest overall economic nation. The highly advanced technology employed by the corporations ensures that no pollution is emitted from the many factories in Industrial Islands. This keeps tourism busy, and more and more corporations are building their factories underground so that they can still take advantage of the geothermal energy yet leave more above-ground room for tourists.
The economy of Typophiles Proper has caught up to that of Industrial Islands' in the past few months, leading to a tense yet friendly rivalry between Protectorate and home nation. In January 2006 Typophiles Proper's economy surpassed that of Industrial Islands', yet in February the economies were judged to be equal.
