Capital punishment, the penalty of death for the commission of a crime, is a controversial issue on which individual nations take many differing stances. This article categorizes individual sovereign entities within NationStates by their respective policies on the death penalty.

The Republic of Zaire The death penalty is used as a punishment for the following crimes: treason, espionage, first-degree murder, rape, witchcraft, drug trafficking, charlatanism, assassination, terrorism, armed robbery, kidnapping, and sabotage. It is also used for the following military crimes: Desertion, mutiny, defection, and war crimes. The typical method used for executions is hanging. Interestingly, most people who are sentenced to death are those who commit political crimes; those who commit non-political crimes often receive only light punishments. The number of executions that takes place annually is difficult to verify, in particular due to the number of people who are extrajudicially executed or forcibly "disappeared." Nation Notes
The United States of Cookesland The Death penalty is still reserved for treason, crimes against humanity and several other offenses. It is administered in a humane manner. Most other crimes sre punished by marooning.
The United Kingdom of Eurasia The death penalty is retained for treason, subversion, terrorism, and genocide. The death penalty is applied through the usage of firing squads.
The Republic of Fbrenia The country has had no government for several decades. In theory, the death penalty remains, but there is no working legal system to apply it.
The Democratic Federation of Grosseschnauzer and the Schnauzerlands The death penalty has not yet been applied as its use is limited to acts of mass terrorism, genocide, or political assassination of government officials. The Schnauzerlands include Grosseschnauzer, Kinderliebstadt, Neu Grosseschnauzer, Purple Schnauzers, the Schnauzer Dominions, the Schnauzer Homelands, and the Schnauzer States. In addition, the death penalty has to be administered in a "humane" manner, and there is uncertainty as to what methods can be legally considered as "humane."
The Empire of Keeslandia The death penalty has not yet been applied in over 35 years as its use is limited to acts of premeditated mass murder, genocide, or political assassination of government officials.
An unofficial moritorium on the use of the death penalty has been in place as declared by Emperor Ullr over the last 10 years. While still on the books, it would take an extraordinary act for it to be applied again and this would certainly not occur during the reign of our current Emperor. As the Emperor has put a moritorium on the practice, Parliament has not felt the need to address the matter.
We'll see whether the issue will arise again when the next succession to the throne occurs.
The Principality of Kurona The death penalty is only practiced for very hanious crimes. Otherwise most prisoners are expelled to deserted islands where they can never harm society again. Such crimes that can yeild the death penalty include: Serial Rape, Attempted Murder of the Princess, and high treason.
The Free Civil State of Liverpool England (including Lox Land Island) The death penalty has recently been re-legalised after 86 years of being illegal. However, it is only applied when an assassination attempt is involved.
Confederated City States of Mikitivity Most cantons have absolished the death penalty, however, Aslan and Valitz cantons still have consistently voted against cantonal measures to absolish capital punishment even though it has not be exercised in either canton since 1925.
The Kingdom of Otea The death penalty officially still exists for a number of crimes, but it has not been applied for 29 years now. Whether or not it should be abolished in the new constitution is still under discussion.
The Holy and Most August Empire of Pantocratoria The death penalty still exists, but can only be applied in the case of certain crimes, and even then, it is never mandatory. There hasn't been an execution in decades.
The Sovereign State of West Ariddia The death penalty has not been abolished, but is never applied. In theory, it is still applicable to murder and high treason.

Undecided nations

The following nations have no legal stance on the death penalty or their current legal stance is disparate.

Nation Notes
The Oceanic Queendom of Khenas The country of Khenas is in a state of political chaos, therefore without a constitution or an official stance on the death penalty.

International Law

The United Nations has attempted to standardize death penalty laws within UN member states with only a few resolutions. The resolutions that have attempted to ban capital punish and adopt an abolitionist stance have been defeated. The Fair Sentencing Act reserved the right of UN members to set their own sentencing standards, and supports neither the pro- or anti- death penalty position.

U.N. Resolution #103, allows a nation to refuse extradiation of a criminal if the nation belives that the criminal may recive the death penalty.
