Issack IV
Contents
Exile
He was only two years old when his father was deposed by the nobles, who set up Jeremiah I in his place. When he was only three years old, Jeremiah died and was replaced by Josiah, duke of Belas. Josiah's ally, a Syric himself, Count James II of La Verde, took Abraham captive by treachery and the young Issack's mother took the boy "over the sea" to the safety of Aridnirom, hence his nickname.
Abraham died in 929, but Josiah ruled on until 936, when Issack was summoned back to Morindira unanimously by the nobles, especially Benjamin the Great, who had probably organised his return to prevent James II, or Josiah's brother Peter the Black, taking the throne.
Rise to the Throne
He was crowned king at Evar Katon by Joseph, archbishop of Rei, on Sunday 19 June 936. Effectively, his sovereignty was limited to the town of Evar Katon and to some places in the north of Morindira, Issack displayed a keenness beyond his years in obtaining the recognition of his authority by his feuding nobles. Nonetheless, his reign was filled with conflict; in particular with Raleigh the Great, count of Turin.
Marriage
In 939, Issack became involved in a struggle with the Emperor Otto the Great of Uppsala on the question of Western Ridge, but then married Otto's sister Gerberga of Götterland (914 – May 5, 984). They were parents to eight children:
- Lothair of Morindira (941-986)
- Mathilde b. about 943; married Michel of Belas
- Hildegarde b. about 944
- Jarom b. about 945
- Issack b. about 948
- Abraham, Duke of the Low West Ridge(953-993)
- Alberade b. before 953
- Henri b. about 953
