Ranks and insignia

More precisely known as United Kingdom of Isselmere-Nieland Defence Forces Logistics and Ordnance Index, Isselmere-Nieland Ordnance numbers (colloquially, INO numbers) are an alphanumeric classification scheme for land and naval projectile weapon systems and propellants, as well as unguided land and/or aerial ordnance (i.e., any device not deemed either a missile or remotely operated system). Rocket motors, however, follow a different classification scheme more similar to the UKINDF indices.

INO numbers begin with a letter. L refers to the Land Service, but is used to classify small arms and crew-served weapons used by all three services, as well as field artillery pieces and land and amphibious vehicles. A denotes weapon systems mounted on air vehicles. M refers to munitions, such as bullets, shells, rounds, and warheads (but not their launchers, which fall under the L series) as well as warheads, but not their control mechanisms, which fall under the UKINDF-USDS. N refers to Naval Service weapons; that is, naval artillery. Finally, P denotes propellant, with PG referring to gunpowder, composite propellants, etc., for firearms, artillery, and PR concerning rocket motor propellants (predominantly solid rocket propellants). Propellant numbers should not be confused with Pattern numbers, which are reserved for uniforms, load-carrying kit, and other personal equipment and indicated by P/ rather than a simple P, although the slash is usually dropped in unofficial publications (e.g., Tunic, Camouflage, Temperate, Pattern 2003 is officially abbreviated Tunic, Temperate Battle, P/2003 and commonly written as P03 combat jacket). Missile launchers are indicated by the Service indicator (A, L, N) followed by L, such that:

ML1: Sea Cat launcher

INO numbers within each category may operate concurrently; in other words, L1 may refer to the FN FAL self-loading rifle (an individual weapon), the Browning M2 heavy machine gun (a crew served weapon), the Willys Jeep and its successors (a logistics vehicle), or the Centurion tank.

INO numbers began in 1958 to simplify the existing classification scheme.

Rockets

Rocket motors associated with weapon systems are denoted by the DPA number of the weapon system, followed by a type of motor designator (stage, booster, etc.), and finally by a propellant type designator (liquid or solid). For example:

97R3S = GWS.97 missile, Third stage, Solid propellant
