James Andrew Thompson is a Confederal politician. He has been a member of three political parties in his life. He was originally elected to the Lanerian Senate as a Democratic Republican in 1954. However, in 1964 he left the Democratic Republicans to protest the party's increasing opposition to racial segregation. He joined the Federalist Party. Although, like all mainstream politicians of either party, he has since denounced racial segregation, he continues to defend his actions on grounds of States' (now Members') rights. In 2007, he became a Republican after the Federalists merged with a number of other Member right-wing parties to form the Republican Party.

Thompson is the oldest and longest serving member of the Lanerian Senate. He is favored to represent his party on the first Confederal Council, heading the Confederal Department of Finance. He would be, by far, the oldest member of the Council. He is a father of four children and fifteen grandchildren.
