History

Early History

The nation of Jasque was formed on February 17, 2003 under the name The Free Republic of Jasque. The nation was formed in a desolate region of the world formerly known as the Cliffs of Insanity. Several other friends of President McDonald also formed nations in the desolate wilderness of the Cliffs. These nations, typically anarchies or poorly led tyrannies, were nearly all doomed to failure. However, at the time the region began to prosper under the new leaders. Several nations joined the United Nations, and Jasque was quickly elected the UN Delegate. United Nations politics were chaotic at the time, so Jasque focused mostly on interregional affairs. It was here that the nation’s population grew to several hundred million, and the nuclear-based industries began to prosper – and pollute.

The Flag

It was during this time in the Cliffs of Insanity that the modern flag was adopted by the nation. The flag's colors, black and gold, represent anarchy and capitalism, respectively. The radioactive symbol was adopted because of the nation's nuclear power industry and its massive influence. It was also to serve as a warning to any would be aggressors, as the nuclear weapons industry had begun to expand. Later the symbol would come to represent the horrible radioactive poisoning that afflicts many of the nation's citizens.

The Capitalist Alliance Era

Life in the Cliffs of Insanity began to deteriorate when several of the nations making up the region degenerated into utter chaos and, ultimately, oblivion. The citizens of Jasque emigrated to the region of Capitalist Alliance in hopes of finding a more active home where they could expand their trade in a peaceful and cooperative environment. Life in the Capitalist Alliance was relatively tranquil, and the nation grew in power during this time.

In late May of 2003, the Atlantic Alliance (AA) led by Louldamin invaded the Capitalist Alliance. President McDonald began to speak out against the AA, and was ejected from the region. The people of Jasque wandered aimlessly for a time while their president contacted national leaders sympathetic to his plight. Eventually the AA was ousted from the region, but not before the people of Jasque found a new home in The New Meritocracy. It was here that Jasque would begin to make a name for itself in the international community.

The Meritocratic Era

On June 5, 2003, Jasque was accepted into The Meritocracy, and President McDonald became a full-fledged Senator of the alliance. The new Senator quickly threw himself into Meritocratic politics, and began working hard to move the alliance forward in its goals -- primarily its economic goals. Senator McDonald was given a promotion to Deputy of the Interior Committee, and the nation’s place in the alliance grew. Ultimately, Senator McDonald would be elected Consul of The Meritocracy on two different occasions

Jasque’s time in the Meritocracy was its most productive, and is frequently called its Golden Age by the populace. Trade expanded significantly, and the nation created many lasting alliances and friendships. The citizenry, happy with their president’s handling of foreign policy, turned inward, and began to forget about outside affairs. Life was good, and many people became incredibly rich. Those who did not become rich generally did not live long enough to complain due to the lack of universal medical care and the horrible radiation pollution in poor neighborhoods.

In March and April of 2004, President McDonald was investigated for criminal charges filed against him through the Meritocratic Court on at least two separate occasions. The resources of Jasque were now being diverted to legal battles and diplomatic relations aimed at smoothing over relations. The investigations all turned up no proof of criminal wrong doing, and the charges were never brought to trial. However, the impact on the nation was profoundly negative. It now seemed to the citizenry that membership within the alliance imposed more costs than benefits.

On April 25, 2004, a military vessel of Jasque was attacked and destroyed by a Mirror Class Destroyer of the Empire of Camozayo, a fellow member of The Meritocracy. Jasque filed charges of criminal gross negligence against the nation for the attack. The investigation was dropped, and the case never went to trial, on the basis that the Camozayoan vessel was under the control of a rebel Nazi captain, and that the nation of Camozayo was not complicit in the crime committed by its citizens. In response, on May 14, 2004, Jasque withdrew from The Meritocracy on the grounds that the alliance no longer served the interests of the nation.

Present

On April 4, 2004, Jasque joined the Organization of Sovereign Nations. After its withdrawal from the Meritocracy, the nation joined the region OSN, and spent a lot more time working on the new alliance. On June 1, 2004, the Treaty of the Organization of Sovereign Nations was finally written, and Jack McDonald, representing Jasque, was the first to sign it. It is here that the nation of Jasque still resides. Most of the nation’s time is now spent on the Globally Unified Statistics and Trade Organization, a massive economic project including several dozen nations from many regions of the world.

Domestic Politics

The domestic politics of Jasque are characterized by a very small and inactive government, and very large and powerful corporations. The government will typically disband due to apathy, resulting in long periods of anarchy within the nation. Despite the state of anarchy, President Jack McDonald is widely recognized as the nation’s official leader. The president is able to enjoy such widespread support primarily through his actions abroad. Jasqueans appreciate the fact that their president is too busy in the international community to bother creating and implementing any domestic agenda.

The nation’s capital is the city of Chernobyl, named such because of a very large nuclear explosion that destroyed the city several generations ago. Most of the policies are now decided upon by the Ivory Tower League (ITL), a group of politically active professors and book publishers. The group originally began meeting in order to discuss academic affairs, but upon finding a vacated capital building they moved their meetings to the former offices of the Radioactive Senate. The ITL did not originally intend to govern the nation, but in order to appease the pesky reporters that showed up at the Senate Building, the ITL began inventing answers to the reporters’ questions. These spur of the moment policy decisions are generally not enforced, and the citizens are generally left alone to govern themselves. However, the ITL has been known to enforce the occasional policy during the summer months when their academic load is not as heavy.

Corporations have a great deal of freedom in Jasque and are not generally bound by any regulations. This has resulted in massive pollution of the nation, primarily through the dumping of nuclear waste. Strangely enough, their have been no major complaints. In some parts of the country the citizens have even embraced the ill-health effects of radiation poisoning. This is a grave concern to many international observers, but is not a hot issue with Jasque’s citizens. As long as money is being made, the citizens seem blissfully unaware of the unhealthy surroundings.

International Projects

The nation has always taken its international projects seriously, as they are frequently the citizens’ only political outlet in an anarcho-capitalist, ultra-libertarian environment. Jasque is currently involved in two large international projects. The first is the Organization of Sovereign Nations, an international alliance based on the principle of national sovereignty. The second project is the Globally Unified Statistics and Trade Organization, an advanced economic calculator.

Alliances, Treaties, and Memberships

Jasque is currently a member of:

The Globally Unified Statistics and Trade Organization,
The First Sovereign Bank,
The Kitimat Pact,
The Organization of Sovereign Nations, and
The Meritocracy.

The nation is also looking for a strong trade alliance to join.
