The Jay Summers League is the top level of McPsychovillian domestic hockey. It began its life as the McPsychovillian Hockey Association League (MHAL) in 1942, but when Jay Summers retired in 1959, the league was renamed to pay tribute to him; many members of the MHA believed that Summers deserved an honour of this magnitude.

It is comprised of sixteen teams in two divisions - the First and Second Divisions - with each of the eight teams in the division playing each other three times, with a total of twenty-one games being played in the league. This is an unusual concept, as it is different from that of many other leagues; to use a recent example, in the 2004/2005 season, the London Knights would play the Andrecht Argonauts once in London, once in Andrecht and once in a neutral stadium, in another city. The fixtures list is set up specifically to avoid clashes occurring.

On some occasions, two teams have shared the top spot at the end of the league season, with an equal number of points. In this event, these teams face one another in a seven-game playoff series to determine the champion in a manner not dissimilar to that of the NHL’s Stanley Cup. Awarded to the champion is the Jay Summers Trophy, and this was the first trophy in the MHA - up until then, the winners of the MHAL were awarded medals individually, but nothing else.
