Geography

La Gomera

Situated off the northwest coast of Africa and just southwest of the Iberian peninsula, the Atlantic Ocean nation is comprised of ten major islands (Madeira, Pursante, Moiguanche, Lanzarote, Fueneventura, Canariacbire, Tenerife, Palma, Gomera, and Hfuipuiche) and about a dozen islets. The islands are the peaks of oceanic volcanoes, having sufaced nearly 14 miilion years ago from eruptions and the movements of the Earth's tectonic plates. The highest peak, Pico Teide (3,718m), can be seen from the African coast, and casts the world's biggest sea-shadow.

History

Despite the fact that inter-insular relations among the indigenous communities cannot be conclusively denied, evidence does seem to suggest that the interaction was relatively low and each island was populated by its own distinct socio-cultural groups.

Though the Arabs never conquered the islands, their proximity to Morocco lended them to much trade with the Morrocans in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.

People

Physical Characteristics

The people of Jaziraat are a true product of their history. The pre-colonial population of Jaziraat is generically referred to as Guanches, although, strictly speaking, Guanches were originally the inhabitants of Tenerife. According to the chronicles, the inhabitants of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote were referred to as Maxos, Canariacbire was inhabited by the Canarii, Hfuipuiche by the Bimbaches, Palma by the Auaritas and Gomera by the Gomeros. When the Greeks and Phoenicians colonized the islands, particularly Madeira and Tenerife, they embedded their genetic code in the mestiço ("mixed-race") children they left behind. Today's inhabitants show signs of millenia of racial conglomeration. The average Jaziraati is short and stocky, olive-skinned, with dark, ondulated hair.

Customs and Culture

It can be said that the people are a fairly simple, earnest kind; regarding hospitality and humility as undeniable facets of life. Strictly faithful to their own island of birth, it is a common sight to see fights at soccer meetings between two rival islands. However, in face of a global community, they put aside differences and unite as one immalleable entity.

Religion

Nearly 90% of the inhabitants follow the Roman Catholic faith. This is due in part to the forced conversion of the natives during the conquest of the islands, which took nearly a century because of native resistance. Previously, the natives we're of either a Muslim faith or grounded in their indigenous, pre-classical beliefs. 4% follow Islam and the remainding 6% still follow the ancient tradition. However, most islanders are non-religious, and church attendence, particularly at Catholic mass, is very low. Pagan holidays are preferred to religious ones, but Christmas and Easter are always celebrated with zeal and excitement.

Language

The official language of Jaziraat is Guanche, the native language to the island of Tenerife. Since the Mencey ("tribal leader") of Tenerife conquered the surrounding islands, he established Guanche as the primary language, which is still in use today.
