Jelehem is the capital city of the Morindiran province of Jaeda in western Morindira. It is situated on the Neharot Bay. The population of the city of Jelehem at the 1999 census was 153,317 inhabitants (157,900 inhabitants estimated as of February 2004). The population of the whole metropolitan area at the 1999 census was 514,559 inhabitants and 552,547 inhabitants at the 2007 estimate.

Geography

Jelehem is surrounded by the Adamah Tova mountians; it lies between two sections of the mountian range that curve around one another. As such, it is often visited by skiing and biking tourists and has been called the "capital of the Adamah Tova".

The city is mainly built on the alluvial plain of the Avi-Kohl at an altitude of around 214 meters. Mountain sports are an important tourist draw for the city. Twenty ski stations surround the city, the nearest being the Blue House, which is about 15 minutes' drive away.

Because the city sits in a valley bottom, it has serious issues of air quality due to the mountains trapping the pollution from a large number of cars, garbage burning plants, chemical plants, paper mills and even nuclear test labs. Radiation detectors can be observed at regular intervals along the Avi-Kohl river. The trash burning plant in Reyan, one of the city's most prosperous suburbs, is currently being investigated for polluting the environment with Dioxin. A similar plant in Havin was found to have been doing the same.

Historically both Jelehem and the surrounding areas were the site of mining and heavy industry. Abandoned mills and factories can be found in small villages like Muré.

Transport

The famous cable cars of Jelehem.
Jelehem can be accessed by plane from SiinJen International Airport near Victoria, Valinskya International Airport, or Jelehem-Isère Airport. Within Jelehem there is a comprehensive bus and tram service, run by Taag. It operates 26 bus lines and 3 tram lines, serving all of greater Jelehem.

The city center is famous for its complex system of one-way streets, the grid-lock of which adds to the local air pollution. The motorway system into the city is particularly poorly designed, with backups many miles long occurring frequently. In summer, pollution alerts further increase congestion by reducing speed limits.

In an effort to stave off the car pollution in Jelehem, the famous cable cars of Jelehem were invented in 1983. Seven-story high cable car wires stretch all along Jelehem, with the egg-shaped cars travelling in groups of four. The cars stop in 70 different stations. Yearly car passes can be purchased for Rt7.50.1 or a one-time pass can be purchased for Rt1.00.1.

History

Jelehem was the capital region of the Thalan Kingdom of Morindira. The region was governed by the Counts of Jelehem, who did homage to the King of Thalan. The Battle of Jelehem was fought at Jelehem on September 19, 1356, during the War of One Thousand Years (which interestinly only lasted three years). In 1832, Praetor Mara Murtakk captured Thalan and assimilated it into Morindira.

King Chala VII of Thalan established the University of Jelehem in 1432, which is operation still today.
