The Founding of Jonothana

Jonothana was founded over the 18th century, slowly, following the signings of treatys between what was an very anarcheic world on a huge scale. They organsied themselves into six main groups. These were, in order of size:

  1. The Jonoans
  2. The Leonians
  3. The Zeckians
  4. The Xenonians
  5. The Saboteurs
  6. The Bonaseans

The Jonoeans were the biggest, owning a very large amount of land, with the sizes of land going in the order of size. Alliances were made, major battle were faught, backs were stabbed, and evetually the Jonoeans and the Leoneans decided they had had enough, and realised that, together, without any backstabbing, they could take over the whole of the area where this warfare took place, and end the fighting.

This worked well, and the newly formed Jonians made massive gains, untill they had forced all the remaining members of the gamgs into a corner, where they were surrounded, on one side, the sea, on the other, a large mass of ruthless fighters who would slay every one of them. Some jumped off the cliffs, whether commiting suicide, or in an attempt to travel the 70 miles of the Vallian Sea to the other side.

However most of them remained, suddenly united, and fought the Jonians for seven long days, and finally it was decided that, whatever the result of the fighting was, there would be a very small amount of people left. And so, in dribs and drabs, they came together and signed a treaty, know oas the treaty of the Vallia, as the land mass that the final battle was fought was known as Vallia. The Jonians were to be given the large amount of land they had at the start, and were to call it Jonothana. The others were to be given their original pieces of land. And, most importantly, they were never to quarrel again. After around fifty years of very uneasy peace, these nations slowly incresed relations, and by about 1850 were good allies.

Jonothana then founded The Vallian Plains, in 1860, as a formalisation of the alliance between the nations formed by the Vallia Treaty, and then from 1863-1880, the nations surrounding them.

The Foundation of Government

After the Jonians became Jonothana, near anarchy took hold. The two ruling families instated order, but the citizens were too used to the freedom of the situation that ended only a few months ago. The highest ranking members, which did follow orders from the families, formed a police force, which, after three months of hard work, instated order.

The two families then debated the ideal system of government. The Jonoa family decided that an absolute monarchy would be best, as it would mean that there was a few people to discuss issues, meaning the best decision could be made, they were the people that would be best for Jonothana, and, obviously, they were two families, and they both contained two generations. The youngest of the generations, Anya Jonoa and Marc Leona, were married. They could be the first King and Queen. However the Leonea family contested Democracy, as they had used it, to the greatest degree possible, when choosing their high ranking officials.

Eventually, they agreed on absolute monarchy, as the Leonas were scared, still, of the Jonoas, even though they were unlikely to force a war, especialy over such an issue. On the 1st of January, 1807 the first article of Jonothanian Common Law was passed:

Article One
Enacted on the first day of the first month of the year beginning eighteen-hundred-and-seven years after the birth of Christ

The rule of Jonothana is hereby to be ruled absolutely to two people, who are to be know singularly as Monarchs, and collectivly as The Monarchy and are trusted to accept advice from every member of the Royal Family, which consists of every accepted relative of the King and Queen, to the degree of Second Cousin.

These two people are to be:

Anya Catherine Emma Jonoa, daugther of David James Jonoa and Elizabeth Mary Jonoa, of the Certified Jonoa Clan

Marc Alan Leona, son of Alan Malcolm Leona and Alice Jane Leona, of the Certified Leona Clan

And so be it.

For three years this worked, the young rulers were benevolent. But then, there was an attack on a slum area on the edges of the Jonothanian desert. This was done by pro-monarchy extremists. It was expected that the monarchy would carry out operations, using the now large Jonothanian army. However, the monarchy did nothing. In fact, the attack was never acknowleged by them. Following this, riots were springing up all around Jonothana. The King and Queen only cared about what was best for them now. The power had got to their heads.

But the rest of the ruling class weren't having it. They weren't removing their family, or close friends. So, it was decided that the Monarchy would still exist, but have limited powers. A government was to be formed. A democratic government. The people were to be given their rightful power.

And so, the government of Jonothana was formed. It was to be situated in Malerokka, the capital, where the Palace was situated. A building was commisioned for it

And this is how Jonothana is ruled today, exept for the minor modernisations which have taken place between then and now.

The Systems of Leadership

Jonothana is run through two main bodies, the Monarchy, and the Parliament. The Parliament has many more powers than the Monarchy, as it is fully democratic. The Monarchy has it's advisory council, the Royal Advisors however, as the Monarchy participates less and less, it is becomming an upper-class club, and has received mass critisism.

The Parliment

The Parliament meets in Leona Palace, a large, beutifully crafted building. Debates are held in the Xenonian Debating Chamber, as they are the family who funded the extension which contains it. The Members of Parliament, or MPs, meet in there to debate and vote on issues,. They do this from Monday to Wednesday. On Thursday, the select commitees meet. Then on Friday, the MPs go to their constuencies for suregeries with their constuents.

Parliament has 246 seats. 200 for the electoral regions (constituencies) of Jonothana, and 46 "list seats". These are elected using a second vote. Each running party wsubmits a list. The higher percentage of the second vote they get, the more seats they are awarded.

The party with the most seats wins, however they must have at least half of the seats, or they will be forced to form a coalition with any number of parties, in order to collect more than half of the seats.

Select Commitees

These are for refined discussion and editing of bills when they are passed through. A bill will go through Parliament for a first reading, the Commitee for a sencond, and the Parliament for a third, after which it will be signed by the two or one monarch, be signed by the two or three "Presiding Members" of the Royal Advisors, and the Prime Minister (bills require 5 signatures), and will become law.

Commitees are created for each bill, and, should it be requested any field which presents ittself as an issue that needs to be flexibly monitored. There are several of these commitees active at different times, and they are constantly changing

The Monarchy

The Monarchy, as described in the history, now has little power. The current monarchs are King Paul and Queen Lotte. They must sign all bills passed, authorise military action, and other small things. The last time one refused to sign something was the now abdicated King George III, when he ethically disagreed on a bill allowing stem cell treatment in '96. He eventually agreed, but had to abdicate, with his wife Queen Jane, after the Silver Jubilee Bombing.
