The foreign policy of Jonquiere-Tadoussac is divided into several categories, with indicators within each one depending on historical relationship, geographical proximity, ancestry, and the like.

Regional Foreign Policy

Due to the nature of the International Democratic Union, Jonquiere-Tadoussac maintains a separate set of relationship qualifiers and offices, which are only used for thos countries who are members.

Relationship Qualifiers

Within the International Democratic Union, there are a range of indicators of quality of the relationship, from exceptional to non-existant, depending on the current Jontadain government's perception of each country and the importance of this relationship.

  • Exceptional/Excellent: The relationship between JT and this country is seen as indispensible, and every reasonable step is taken to ensure its continuity. This classification usually requires the country haven taken an extraordinary step to aid JT at some point during its history.
  • Very High/High: Very friendly relations between JT and this country; there have been no or extremely rare signs of hostility between the two. Regular meetings take place between delegations from the two countries at the IDU.
  • Medium: Friendly relations exist, though the frequency of relations is lower. These countries have shown no or rare signs of hostility towards JT.
  • Low/Very Low: These countries are seen as potential threats to JT's security. Normally, countries with this rating are seen as potentially hostile or as colonies of external powers.
  • State of War: Only used where a state of declared war exists between the two countries, or where imminent hostilities are perceived.
  • Non-existent: The country in question has no government of which to speak, and is in general anarchy. "Relations" only exist for the safeguarding of Jontadain citizens in this country.

Types of Diplomatic Offices

Though all Jontadain diplomatic offices are generally equivalent (with the exception of "Operations"), a number of different classifications exist. Higher classifications are meant to be greater honours to the host nation, while higher offices have a greater range of services at their disposal.

  • Grand Delegation: The title of the diplomatic representatives of JT to the IDU. This includes JT's permanent office in the Free Land of the IDU, as well as any persons assigned to IDU conferences and negotiations. The office is led by the current Jontadain Regional Affairs Minister.
  • Commission: The highest classification of diplomatic office, these are only granted to countries with "Very High" or better relationships ("Excellent", in the case of High Commissions). There are three types of commissions, rising in stature: Commissions, High Commissions, and the Grand Commission (given to the country whose relationship JT feels is the most important).
  • Embassy: The standard office for those countries with which JT has regular relations.
  • Delegation: Granted to countries with which JT has infrequent relations. The Delegate has no power to negotiate agreements, this must be deferred to the Jontadain Regional Affairs Minister. (Note: Different from Grand Delegation)
  • Operation: These are handled by the Sérvice d'espionnage Jontadain, and exist only to provide services to Jontadain citizens in that country. They are not official diplomatic represenatives, though they will manage an Operation Office which is open to the public.

1The Embassy in Grosseschnauzer also covers affairs in all of the other Schnauzerlands territories, which each have an Ambassadorial Delegation Office, which answers to the Ambassador to Grosseschnauzer.

2Official Jontadain Policy is to deny Otea's independence from Baranxtu; thus, the two are treated as one unit for foreign relations, and the same High Commission operates in both territories.

3Though Stolidia is generally perceived to be a colony of Ausserland, positive relations between JT and both Stolidia and Ausserland have warranted the granting of a higher rating to this relationship than with other extraregional colonies.
