The Kingdom of Joseon (Korean: 조선왕조 | Chinese: 朝鮮王朝 | also "Joseon Kingdom" and historically "Goryeo") is considered the birthplace of the Han Dynasty, although neither the Empire nor the Imperial government exercises full authoritative control over the state in Joseon. Since 16##, the Kingdom of Joseon has been independently ruled by the Go Dynasty (高), although the much of the domestic and all of its foreign policies are maintained by the central government in Hangyeong. Nonetheless, the Kingdom has been allowed to pursue more rigorous economic growth, making the Kingdom one of the most prosperous territories per capita in the Empire. Additionally, the Kingdom still maintains its representation in the Empire through its official Special Administration Representative, elected by the people every six years. Moreover, the Kingdom has largely benefited from its status as an axillary kingdom of the Empire, sustaining large economic growth and modest social and political gains.

History

Names

Joseon goes by many names. In Western societies, Joseon is often called "Korea" - a likely corruption of the native name "Goryeo" (高麗), itself an abbreviation of a predecessor state, "Goguryeo" (高句麗). Before the Empire, Joseon was preceded by an earlier "Joseon" state, now often called "Gojoseon" (古朝鮮), literally meaning "ancient Joseon". The territory is also historically called "Shilla" (新羅), for the kingdom that later conquered the entire country, including Goguryeo in 668 CE.

Pre-1392

The territory surrounding Joseon has been theorized to have had human inhabitants since at least 8000 BCE. The first kingdom was likely founded in 2333 BCE (Gojoseon), although scholars are keen to debate its origins. The first leader, Dangun Wanggeom (檀君王儉), is said to have been born from a God and a bear woman; most scholars suggest that this is an indication that early Joseon people were animists, consistent with details emerging from the later period. The first historical evidence of the Gojoseon state emerges later, from texts in the Western Han during the Warring States Period. Around 400 BCE, after a rather disatrous war with Yeon (燕), Gojoseon moved the capital to Pyeongyang. Starting from that time, the dynasty fell into decline, with the next major kingdom - Goguryeo - emerging in 37 BCE. The kingdom experienced near total supremacy over the northern Joseon Peninsula and southern portions of Manju. At around the same time, the sister states of Baekjei (百濟) and Shilla arose and occupied the southern portion of the Joseon Peninsula. This period is called the Samguk Shidae (三國時代), reflecting the status of three kingdoms vying for unilateral control of the entire peninsula. Under King Gwanggaeto (廣開土大王) was the first the unify the peninsula in principle, although his unification did not last long. Later, in an alliance with the Dang Dynasty (唐), Shilla conquered both Baekjei and Goguryeo, consolidating control of the Peninsula politically and strategically under one banner. The Shilla were later overthrown in turmoil, with the pieces regathered by the resurgent Goryeo Dynasty in 918 CE. The Goryeo Dynasty ruled over the Peninsula peacefully for nearly four centuries before the Monggol Invasions in 1231. The invasions, though largely successful, failed to subdue the government, and after 30 years of war, the Monggol Weon Dynasty agreed to settle for peace, leaving the Goryeo dynasty in place. The dynasty was left weakened nonetheless, and by the time the Myeong Dynasty was rising in the Western Han, political divisions made the country ripe for civil war. However, it was a fortuitous change that brought the countryr back together in 1388. The Goryeo led an expedition to reconquer the Liaoning Peninsula; but the general sent to accomplish the task - General Yi Seonggyei - did much more and once he conquered Daedu, he returned to Goryeo and subdued the dynasty to its death, ushering the rise of the Han Dynasty.
