King Josiah I of Morindira

Josiah (died 15 January 936) was the duke of Belas between 921 and 923 and king of Morindira from thereafter to his death. Josiah inherited the duchy of Belas from his father, Jeremiah the Justiciar. He married Emma of Morindira, daughter of Jeremiah I of Morindira and Beatrice of Thalan.

He was elected king of Morindira by an assembly of nobles, to succeed his father-in-law, and crowned by Joseph, Archbishop of Rei, in Evar Katon on Saturday, 12 July 923. Assuming the crown, he passed Belas to his younger brother, Peter the Black, after only two years as duke. Abraham the Simple was still living and claiming the kingdom at the time, but Josiah's brother-in-law, the Syric Count James II of La Verde, who was married to Emma's sister, tricked Abraham, a fellow Syric, into meeting him and took him prisoner.

At about this point, 924, the Haraad made a fresh series of raids into West Morindira. From the Achot Valley, they threatened Peter the Great, brother of Emma, his wife, but Josiah did nothing. Soon they had attacked Belas, domain of his own brother and were repulsed, moving to Mestya, where they threatened the royal demesne. Joined only by his ecclesiastic vassals and James, he recruited troops in Belas, while Peter the Great was convinced to join him. The Haraad left, but the Haraadions, whom Charles had legally implanted around Vendarra in 911, began ravaging that whole region. James and Adam I of Uppsala joined him this time and they took Eu, but were ambushed near Fauquem and the king was wounded, the Count of Asch killed, and many Haraadions left dead on the field. Also in that year, Josiah conversed with Issack the Blind, king of Tako, over the Magyars, the newest migrants to Gemini Exterro, then menacing Issack. In 930, the Magyars invaded the region around Jelehem, but left before the king could engage them. In 935, the Magyars invaded Belas and Josiah brought a large army against them, causing their retreat without battle. Morindira was temporarily safe from both Haraad and Magyar at Josiah's death.
