History

Kabita was founded by the Benevolent Drifter in the medieval ages. Kabita (at this time, a small band of peasants) traveled across the world, establishing Kabitian rule on numerous alleys and sewers throughout North America and the Pacific. When Mactopia was founded, Benevolent Drifter VII built rafts out of old station wagons and Kabita set sail for Mactopia.

The Kabitian Station Wagon Fleet washed up on a shore on a medium-sized island, full of untamed wilderness. The Kabitians quickly began to explore the island, and soon found there was a plentiful supply of coca plants on the island. Kabita quickly became one of the world's most notorious drug outposts.

Exodus From Mactopia

As Mactopian power continued to grow, several nations began to see the need for a delegate to the United Nations to be elected. El Commandante came out of his isolation, making an address on the Mactopian News Network (MNN) that announced his plan to activate the "Mactopian doomsday device" if his nation, Spoonmenistan, was not elected UN Delegate. Several nations, Kabita included, believed he was bluffing. However, several nations also sided with Spoonmenistan and decided to go to his side. However, because of many of these nations were allied to Kabita at the time, decided to hold off actually voting and instead merely voiced their intention of voting for Spoonmenistan when and if a vote took place. For the next several years, an uneasy political stalemate took place, with many economic, political, and militaristic relationships deteriorating. When a coup put a democracy in power after a long war, Kabita decided to cast its vote for Romanii Nova. Spoonmenistan retaliated by sending several warning missiles into Kabitian territory in TigerLeopard. Kabita then decided to move off to the largely uninhabited Driftopian continent discovered several years earlier.

Government

Kabita is a progressive democracy, slowly repealing the laws of the Benevolent Drifters and becoming more free, now allowing citizens to vote for representatives.

Kabita devotes most of it's attentions to Law and Order, though the military also recieves considerable funding. Kabita also maintains the largest and most powerful navy in all of Driftopia. Ironically for a nation of former peasants, the government offers no social programs at all. The government usually sides on the side of science, except in cases that endanger it's stunning environment (Benevolent Drifter IX was an ardent environmentalist.) The manbearpig is also fiercely protected.

Old Government

Benevolent Drifter VII soon got to establishing a capital city, Yorkeland, as well as taking control of the entire country under control of his iron fist. The Benevolent Drifter (I) allowed his citizens minimal civil rights and had aided the drug lords in stimulating the economy through narcotics, probably due to the fact they were most likely bribing him. Political freedoms in Kabita were few for most of its history, though for a brief time under the late Benevolent Drifters there was a limited democracy for lower offices.

Coup

A small democratic movement had been growing since the early years of Kabita's history, and in fact many of Kabita's greatest minds had been secret supporters of it. The Benevolent Drifters, though they allowed basic civil rights and personal liberties for their citizens, had always been notorious for violently executing political dissenters. As Kabita continued to grow, the authoritarian government began to collapse under its huge weight, unable to keep the growing discontent of its people under control. In a vain attempt to keep power, many of the recent Benevolent Drifters had attempted to keep their power by loosening their iron grip on the populace and even allowing elections for small offices such as mayor.

Due to concessions by the Drifters, the people's rebellious attitudes toward the government began to recede a bit, though many still harbored wishes for a real democracy. During the times of oppression, several democratic militant groups had began to form underground. Several of these groups had disbanded in recent years, though a few had managed to survive. The most prevalent of these was the Democratic Kabitian Movement (DKM), led by left-wing revolutionary and people's hero Roger Bryers.

A few years ago, Benevolent Drifter XI died and his son took his place. XII, who had been suspected of being schizophrenic, reversed many of his predecessors' policy changes and began to raise a secret police force to kill off political dissidents. Soon after he took power, Roger Bryers was found murdered in his rural home in the Garbaldian Mountains. The populace was shocked to their very core and soon many citizens were taking up arms and heading off to join the DKM. Daniel Wande, Bryers' lieutenant, took control of the DKM and declared all out war on XII's government. Most of the military (most of whom were forced to enlist and stay in) deserted and join the rebels. Most of the country gave itself over willingly with little or no resistance within days. The sole great battle of the coup was in Yorkeland, the capital. All those loyal to Benevolent Drifter XII had flocked there to protect the Box Palace, the Drifters' place of residence. Wande organized 35,000 troops, most of them ex-military, to attack the capital. XII had 29,000 of Kabita's finest and most decorated soldiers at his disposal, including the infamous Super Soldiers of legend. Wande sent 20,000 to besiege the city while the other 15,000 would infiltrate. Wande had underestimated XII's soldiers however, as the 15,000 were defeated within a few days' time. Wande decided that the only way to defeat them would be to wait them out or send in more troops to get killed until they ran out of ammunition. So Wande waited.

Meanwhile, XII was mentally deteriorating as he saw what was happening, and in a mad rage he got into an experimental X1-22 fighter jet and took off. The X1-22 was equipped with 8 bombs, each capable of destroying everything within a 10 mile radius. But in a surprise twist, XII crashed jet straight down into his palace, killing most of his men and a large number of the DKM.

Wande survived however, and soon established a democracy, with him being elected as president.

Culture

Kabita is world-reknowned for it's fine coca and poppies, and much of Kabita's wealth is derived from this. Drug farms can be found all across the island, which has the perfect climate for poppy farming.

Kabita was also home to Mactopia's knife-fighting tournaments, in which Kabita had won 120 of in the contest's 165 year history. A few years ago, the Forkanian competitors in the Mactopian Knife-Fighting Tournament were murdered by The Brotherhood of the Undead Monkey Rat. This was the incident that began to escalate toward Mactopia War I.

People in Kabita traditionally wear large feathered hats wherever they go, though this tradition is beginning to disappear as Kabita is beginning to open up to the outside world. Houses are large and cyndrical, and usually made of hard stone or occasionally metal.

The TigerLeopardian Conflict

Recently, Kabita used its naval might to blockade and collapse the weakened TigerLeopardian government after the country was ravaged by a disease. It is heavily rumored that Kabita may have had a hand in assassinating the royal family, though this is still debated. Several million former TigerLeopardians have fled to nearby Romanii Nova. Romanii Nova, which wants to take control of the continent it lies on, is secretly funding TigerLeopardian militants to fight against Kabita's forces. Kabita is responding by selling nuclear weapons to terrorists in Romanii Nova. This "secondhand war" may soon develop into a full blown regional war, say some analysts.

International Relations

Kabita was a large, isolated nation for the longest time, but after the overthrow of the Benevolent Drifters they opened up to the world, losing their militaristic attitude in exchange for a generally more free outlook to the world. Slowly but surely Kabita is becoming a major regional power.
