Eduard V of Alessandri
|
His Majesty King Eduard V (Eduard Wolfgang Friedrich Christian Waldemar), (September 23, 1646 - December 23, 1663) (1663 DE) was third child of King Eduard IV and Queen Frances of Alessandri. He was the twin brother of Princess Anna of Alessandri.
Childhood
The birth of twins, a boy, followed by a girl six minutes later, was announced at the Neues Palais on September 23, 1646, the third and fourth children of King Eduard IV and Queen Frances. Their christening, on October 12, was a spectacular affair, attended by the majority of the noble houses of Alessandri. The boy was given the names Eduard Wolfgang Friedrich Christian Waldemar, the first to honor not only his father and grandfather, but his stillborn elder brother, while his sister was christened Anna Luisa Elisabeth Mary Charlotte Viktoria.
In the early stages of his life, Eduard was a cheerful and outgoing child. However, when his twin sister died in 1650 of typhoid fever, Eduard became sullen and withdrawn. He was prone to violent temper tantrums and mood swings. His parents were at a loss at how to deal with him, and there had been talk, in early 1663, among the king and his ministers of omitting Prince Eduard from the line of succession and naming Prince Georg, born in 1648, the new heir. This plan however, fell through when later than autumn, King Eduard IV died suddenly of what is now believed to be a heart attack.
Reign
Prince Eduard immediatly ascended the throne of Alessandri at age sixteen. He was the first monarch in the history of Alessandri to never have been coronated. His reign lasted less than three months, and he never exercised any power during that time.
Murder
On the morning of December 23, 1663, King Eduard V was found stabbed to death in his bed. Foul play was suspected, and his footman, Klaus Tauber, was convicted of the murder and executed the following January, by order of the new king, Eduard's younger brother, Georg I. Eduard was buried at the Royal Masoleum near Schloss Hanover.
